Blumhouse and Lionsgate Deliver Cuddly Horror with “Imaginary”

Imaginary 2024

In a exciting collaboration between Blumhouse and Lionsgate, the trailer for the upcoming horror film Imaginary has been unveiled, causing quite a stir for fans of horror movies based around evil toys. Currently set for a March 8 release, the film is directed by Jeff Wadlow, known for his work on Fantasy Island and Truth or Dare.

The plot revolves around Jessica, portrayed by the talented DeWanda Wise, who returns to her childhood home with her family. The tranquility is disrupted when her stepdaughter, Alice, becomes fixated on Chauncey, a seemingly innocent stuffed bear discovered in the basement. As Jessica delves into the eerie connection between Alice and Chauncey, she begins to suspect that this stuffed bear might be more than just a childhood toy.

Keri Moore, Lionsgate’s co-president of theatrical marketing, shared insights into the film’s premise, stating, “Something you see across cultures is that children have a unique access to the spirit world. What if their imaginary friends are something from the spirit world? What if these imaginary friends were real, and what if when you left one of them, that made them upset?”

The teaser trailer, initially showcased exclusively in theaters before Blumhouse’s bear-laden box office hit Five Nights at Freddy’s, captivated audiences by immersing them in a first-person perspective, accompanied by a haunting audio experience.

It also comes off the back of another Blumhouse success based on a toy with sinister motives, M3gan, which has grossed $181 million since its release at the beginning of the year.

The star-studded cast includes DeWanda Wise, Tom Payne (The Walking Dead), Betty Buckley (Split), Taegen Burns (The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers), Pyper Braun (Desperation Road), Matthew Sato (High School Musical: The Musical: The Series), and Veronica Falcón (Jungle Cruise).

Director Jeff Wadlow, who serves as a producer alongside Jason Blum, has a track record in the horror genre under his belt. DeWanda Wise not only takes on the lead role but also assumes the role of executive producer alongside Ryan Turek.
