“Sweet Meats” Promises a Disturbing Culinary Nightmare

Sweet Meats

In a chilling collaboration between industry veterans and rising talents, Sweet Meats is set to plunge audiences into a nightmarish culinary experience that harkens back to the golden era of horror films. A collaboration between Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz of Troma Entertainment, PJ Starks, and NKY Films, this horrifying tale promises to deliver a bone-chilling cinematic experience.

Sweet Meats brings together the minds of writer/director Ricky Glore and an ensemble cast to create a throwback horror movie reminiscent of classics like Motel Hell and Roger Corman’s Little Shop of Horrors.

Speaking exclusively to Love Horror, writer/director Ricky Glore said, “I want to bring the ‘fun’ back into horror movies. I think there is still room in the genre for non self-serious horror like Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, Motel Hell, A Bucket of Blood, Theatre of Blood, Little Shop of Horrors, Mother’s Day and bunch more flicks I grew up with. That’s what we’re trying to do with Sweet Meats, and that’s why I think it being a TROMA movie is a great marriage. While talking to Mr. Kaufman (Lloyd) about the script, the thing that he really enjoyed was the dark humor of it. He wants us to lean into that and really explore these characters.

Equally, Edgar Wright and Roger Avary have really been supportive of the film online, and that makes me feel good, knowing that they see the tone and vibe we’re going to go for, and they too are excited to see something like this, as unique as it is, being made.”

The film’s synopsis revolves around Bobby Sweet, a country music legend and the face of the world-renowned “Sweet Meats” since he opened his first restaurant with his wife in 1978. The secret to his restaurant’s rapid success and the unnaturally sweet taste of his meat is shrouded in mystery. As the saying goes, “you’d be disgusted if you knew what you were really eating,” and Sweet Meats might just prove that point.

NKY Films is proud to present this terrifying tale, which will be filmed in the eerie setting of Wilder, Kentucky, specifically at Bobby Mackey’s, a notoriously haunted slaughterhouse featured on Travel Channel’s Ghost Adventures. The spine-tingling locations also include Nick’s Restaurant in Harrison, Ohio.

Behind the scenes, the film boasts a talented team with special effects by Lizzie Schreibeis, wardrobe by Ashley Meenach, and Nicholas Hiance as the director of photography. The project is produced by PJ Starks, Chris Morris, and Mike Flinchum. The score will be orchestrated by David Kornfeld, the Jeff Award-winning composer known for his work on Haymarket: A New Folk Musical and currently touring as the Associate Conductor of the Broadway musical Jagged Little Pill.

PJ Starks explains, “Ricky has a very irreverent sense of humor, I feel will play well with modern audiences. The tone and scope of the movie is something worth mentioning because it’s not something you see being produced nowadays and brings back that fun taste of cult cinema we rarely get to experience. That’s why I’m excited to be part of the project. Plus I’m a huge Tobe Hooper fan as well as a musical nut. The film has those qualities and I couldn’t be more excited about it. Growing up on a steady diet of horror and cult, I was always re-renting The Toxic Avenger films or Monster in the Closet. The fact TROMA is involved takes this whole production to another level of awesome.”

Lloyd Kaufman, Michael Herz, and Troma Entertainment are producing and distributing Sweet Meats, further solidifying the film’s credentials in the horror genre. The film boasts an exciting cast, including Timmy Barron, Eileen Earnest, Andrew Gordon, Amanda Chilelli, and Ricky Glore.
