The Exorcist: Believer Set to Haunt Cinemas This October

The Exorcist: Believer 2023

Get ready to face the ultimate evil once again. On Friday the 13th of October, 2023, the spine-chilling legacy of horror returns with The Exorcist: Believer. A new tale of darkness directed by David Gordon Green, the visionary behind the Halloween franchise revival, is set to send shivers down your spine.

Exactly half a century after the release of the ground-breaking horror classic, The Exorcist (1973), the terrifying saga continues to captivate audiences.

The new film film stars Tony winner and Oscar nominee Leslie Odom, Jr. (One Night in Miami, Hamilton) as Victor Fielding, a father who has navigated the depths of grief after losing his wife in a devastating earthquake. Raising their daughter Angela, portrayed by Lidya Jewett (Good Girls), he is faced with an unimaginable challenge when Angela and her friend Katherine (newcomer Olivia Marcum) mysteriously vanish in the woods, only to return days later with no recollection of their ordeal.

This enigmatic incident sets off a chain of events that compel Victor to confront unparalleled malevolence. Desperate and terrified, he seeks guidance from the only person who has ever encountered such darkness – Chris MacNeil. For the first time in five decades, Oscar winner Ellen Burstyn reprises her iconic role as Chris MacNeil, the actress forever changed by her daughter’s ordeal in the original 1973 film.

Emmy winner Ann Dowd (The Handmaid’s Tale, Hereditary) joins the cast as Victor and Angela’s neighbor, while Grammy winner Jennifer Nettles (Harriet, The Righteous Gemstones) and two-time Tony winner Norbert Leo Butz (Fosse/Verdon, Bloodline) portray Katherine’s parents.

“The Exorcist: Believer” not only resurrects a haunting legacy but also promises to reimagine horror. The film, inspired by William Peter Blatty’s best-selling book, is directed by David Gordon Green and penned by Peter Sattler, David Gordon Green, Scott Teems, and Danny McBride. The production boasts the creative prowess of Jason Blum, David Robinson, and James G. Robinson.

As the trailer for The Exorcist: Believer stirs both excitement and trepidation, it’s clear that Green’s vision navigates new terrain while paying homage to the original. However, capturing the raw essence of Friedkin’s masterpiece proves to be a daunting challenge. The trailer hints at the film’s polished aesthetic, though critics argue that the original’s unique essence remains unattainable.

Following the passing of William Friedkin, the visionary director of the original Exorcist, both Green and producer Jason Blum paid tribute to his indelible legacy. Green commended Friedkin’s bold and visionary work, acknowledging its timeless influence on filmmakers.
