Universal Pictures has released an exhilarating trailer for the upcoming film ‘The Blackening’ (2022), and director Tim Story recently sat down for an insightful interview, shedding light on the highly anticipated horror comedy.

In an interview with The Wrap, Story delved into the unique blend of genres that ‘The Blackening’ offers. Describing it as a “horror comedy with a thriller twist,” Story expressed his excitement about creating a film that seamlessly combines elements of humor and suspense. He emphasized the importance of striking a delicate balance between scares and laughs, aiming to provide audiences with an entertaining and unpredictable experience.

The film’s premise revolves around a group of friends reuniting for a Juneteenth weekend getaway, only to find themselves trapped in a remote cabin with a twisted killer. Story explained that the concept of friends being terrorized by a sadistic killer in a cabin was a familiar trope in horror films. However, ‘The Blackening’ aims to subvert expectations by infusing it with comedic moments and unexpected plot twists.

Story praised the exceptional ensemble cast, including Grace Byers, Jermaine Fowler, Melvin Gregg, X Mayo, Dewayne Perkins, Antoinette Robertson, Sinqua Walls, Jay Pharoah, and Yvonne Orji. He highlighted their ability to navigate the delicate balance between humor and horror, bringing depth and authenticity to their characters.

Collaborating with screenwriters Tracy Oliver and Dewayne Perkins, Story commended their ability to craft a screenplay that defies traditional genre boundaries. He expressed his admiration for their talent in delivering witty dialogue and compelling character arcs, enhancing the film’s overall narrative.

As the trailer gained momentum, Story discussed the importance of Juneteenth as a backdrop for the film. He expressed his desire to use the celebration of freedom and empowerment as a thematic element, highlighting the resilience of the characters in the face of danger.
