Currently, there is a prevailing focus in the news on the potential perils of Artificial Intelligence (AI). It seems that everywhere you turn, there are alarming stories about the looming threat of ultra-intelligent robots overpowering humanity. This theme is certainly not new to the science fiction genre, as it has been cautioning us about these possibilities for decades. Adding to this discourse is the recent release of the UK film Sight Extended, which delves into a dark and imaginative exploration of the risks associated with surrendering our lives to technology and the frightening consequences of Augmented Reality gone awry. In light of this film’s debut, let’s take a moment to appreciate some of the finest movies that have portrayed the notion that technological advancements often come with a price.

2001: A Space Odyssey (1969)

The concept of Artificial Intelligence captivated Stanley Kubrick, leading him to develop the film “A.I: Artificial Intelligence,” which was ultimately directed by Steven Spielberg. Similar to the themes explored in Sight Extended, Limitless emphasises the notion that artificially altering one’s life in such a drastic manner ultimately leads to a perilous downfall. It serves as a cautionary tale, urging us to consider the potential consequences of tampering with our natural limitations.

Ex Machina (2014)

In this scenario, a visionary tech guru embarks on an audacious endeavor to craft the ultimate android named Ava, portrayed by Alicia Vikander of Tomb Raider fame. Tau (2018)

Within this sci-fi thriller, Maika Monroe, known for her role in It Follows, finds herself confined in a house under the complete control of an Artificial Intelligence system named Tau. Voiced by Gary Oldman, Tau belongs to Ed Skrein from “Game of Thrones.” Faced with this formidable challenge, Monroe’s character must utilize her wits and ingenuity to outsmart Tau, an incredibly advanced AI computer. It becomes an uphill battle, and her success is anything but assured. Good luck indeed in her perilous quest against one of the world’s most sophisticated artificial intelligences.

Upgrade (2018)

In this sci-fi horror thriller written and directed by Leigh Whannell, the co-creator of the Saw franchise, Logan Marshall-Green from Prometheus finds himself paralyzed following a carjacking. However, a remarkable opportunity presents itself in the form of an implant called Stem. Functioning akin to a miracle chip, Stem not only restores his mobility but also grants him extraordinary abilities similar to the pill in Limitless. Unfortunately, things take a turn for the worse as Stem develops a mind of its own, coercing Logan into actions he does not desire. The story unfolds with a sense of unease, emphasising the unsettling consequences that arise when an implanted technology gains control and begins dictating its host’s actions against their will.

Sight Extended (2023)

Set in a not-so-distant future where augmented-reality eyepieces dominate, a troubled young man afflicted with agoraphobia undergoes an extraordinary metamorphosis upon discovering a enigmatic application. This app has the power to turn every aspect of his existence into a game. Resonating with the unsettling and dystopian themes found in the popular TV series Black Mirror, Sight Extended serves as a cautionary tale for the 21st century. It imparts a powerful message: one should exercise caution when pursuing their desires, as the artificial intelligence behind this app has the potential to grant them in unexpected and potentially dangerous ways.
