‘Victorian Psycho’ Brings Gothic Horror to UK Cinemas This Autumn

A remote country estate, a mysterious new governess and a growing sense that something is terribly wrong take centre stage in the newly released trailer for Victorian Psycho. True Brit Entertainment has offered the first substantial look at the gothic horror ahead of its UK and Irish theatrical release this autumn, with Maika Monroe leading a cast that also includes Jason Isaacs, Ruth Wilson and Thomasin McKenzie.

Directed by Zachary Wigon, whose previous feature Sanctuary earned critical acclaim following its Toronto International Film Festival premiere, Victorian Psycho adapts Virginia Feito’s 2025 novel of the same name. The film had its world premiere earlier this year in the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival and is set to reach UK cinemas through True Brit Entertainment in autumn 2026.

Monroe stars as Winifred, an eccentric governess who arrives at the isolated Ensor House in Victorian England. At first, her unsettling manner is dismissed as little more than an unusual personality, but as members of the household begin disappearing and increasingly disturbing events unfold, those around her begin to suspect their newest arrival may be hiding something far more sinister.

Alongside Monroe, the cast features Jason Isaacs, Ruth Wilson, Thomasin McKenzie, Jacobi Jupe and Evie Templeton. Monroe, who has become one of contemporary horror’s most recognisable leading performers through films including It Follows, Watcher and Longlegs, takes on another psychologically driven role, while Isaacs and Wilson add further weight to the period thriller’s cast.

The screenplay has been written by Feito, adapting her own novel for the screen. The Spanish author made her literary debut with Mrs. March before following it with Victorian Psycho, a darkly comic gothic thriller that quickly attracted attention for its distinctive central character.

Behind the camera, Wigon continues a career that has steadily evolved from independent filmmaking into larger studio-backed productions. After debuting with The Heart Machine, he drew widespread praise for Sanctuary, and Victorian Psycho represents his third feature as director.

Production itself also underwent a notable casting change before filming began. Margaret Qualley was originally attached to play the lead role before departing the project, with Monroe stepping into the part ahead of principal photography in Ireland during 2025. The film also saw a change in US distribution before Bleecker Street ultimately acquired North American rights.

Victorian Psycho opens in UK and Irish cinemas through True Brit Entertainment in autumn 2026. The newly released trailer is available to watch now.
