First released in 2001, The Devil’s Backbone remains one of del Toro’s most celebrated and emotionally resonant films. Often viewed as a companion piece to Pan’s Labyrinth, it trades dark fantasy for a ghost story rooted in real-world horror.

Set during the final days of the Spanish Civil War, the film follows young Carlos, who arrives at a remote orphanage for children displaced by the conflict. It is not long before he discovers that the building harbours a tragic secret: the restless spirit of a boy named Santi, whose death still echoes through its shadowy corridors.

What begins as a traditional ghost story slowly reveals itself to be something far more profound. Del Toro weaves together themes of war, loss and innocence, using the supernatural not just to frighten, but to explore the scars left behind by violence and betrayal.

Produced by Pedro Almodóvar, and featuring a standout cast including Fernando Tielve, Eduardo Noriega, Marisa Paredes and Federico Luppi, the film has been widely praised as a modern gothic masterpiece.
