‘V/H/S/Halloween’ to Deliver New Found Footage Frights This October

The V/H/S franchise is returning this autumn with a new holiday-themed entry. As reported by Variety, Shudder has officially announced V/H/S/Halloween, the eighth instalment in the found footage anthology series, which will debut on the platform on 3 October.

Continuing the franchise’s legacy of mixing new and established voices in horror, V/H/S/Halloween will feature segments directed by Paco Plaza (REC, Verónica), Alex Ross Perry (Her Smell, Queen of Earth), and Appendage director Anna Zlokovic. The line-up also includes Bryan M. Ferguson, Micheline Pitt-Norman and R.H. Norman, along with cult favourite Casper Kelly, best known for Too Many Cooks and Adult Swim Yule Log.

The V/H/S series began in 2012 and quickly gained traction for its inventive format, where disparate filmmakers contribute short found-footage stories linked by a shared framing device. Each film has evolved the concept while preserving its DIY horror aesthetic. Previous entries include year-themed instalments such as V/H/S/99, V/H/S/85 and last year’s sci-fi-leaning V/H/S/Beyond, which featured Kate Siegel’s directorial debut.

The franchise has earned a reputation as a proving ground for emerging talent, as well as a flexible platform for established directors to experiment with tone, structure and theme. Plaza and Ross Perry’s involvement in V/H/S/Halloween signals a continued shift towards high-profile filmmakers bringing their unique sensibilities to the project.

While plot details are still under wraps, Shudder’s seasonal timing suggests a thematic focus on Halloween horror, something the franchise has not previously explored in a full feature-length instalment. Given the creative freedom associated with the V/H/S model, the mix of stylised horror and abrasive found footage is expected to continue, but the inclusion of names like Plaza points to a potentially more cinematic edge.

Created by Brad Miska and developed in collaboration with various filmmakers under the Bloody Disgusting banner, the series has grown from an experimental indie debut at Sundance into a wide-ranging franchise spanning sequels, spin-offs and a miniseries. Shudder’s latest instalment is likely to extend that reach further, offering yet another eclectic and unpredictable collection of horror shorts just in time for October’s festivities.
