Danielle Deadwyler Fights for Soil in ’40 Acres’

Vertigo Releasing has set a UK and Ireland theatrical roll-out for 40 Acres, the post-apocalyptic thriller headlined by Danielle Deadwyler, from 1 August. The film’s world premiered at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival where it garnered strong acclaim, and now it lands in select cinemas ahead of a digital release on 4 August.

40 Acres 2025

Set in a future ravaged by famine, 40 Acres follows Hailey Freeman (Deadwyler) and her kin, the last descendants of African American settlers who established a community in rural Canada in 1875 after the first Civil War. Resources grow scarce and hostile outsiders threaten to wrest their land. Freeman must marshal every ounce of resilience to defend the farmstead that has sheltered her family for generations.

Deadwyler’s performance anchors the film. The New York Times declared that “Deadwyler’s forceful energy fills the frame,” while Collider praised the story as a “thrillingly told apocalyptic tale,” and Variety lauded its “full of fresh ideas” approach to the genre. Her portrayal brings raw intensity to a world where every sunrise could signal new peril.

Joining Deadwyler are Kataem O’Connor, familiar to audiences from Murdoch Mysteries and Time Cut, as Hailey’s steadfast brother, and Michael Greyeyes, whose credits include The King Tide and 1923, as a ruthless outsider whose own survival depends on the Freeman property. Supporting roles are filled by Milcania Diaz-Rojas, Leenah Robinson and Jaeda LeBlanc, each adding depth to a cast rooted in community and history.

Director R.T. Thorne, known for his television work on Blindspot and The Porter, makes his feature debut with 40 Acres, a script he co-wrote with Glenn Taylor from a story he developed with Lora Campbell. Thorne’s background in tight-knit drama infuses the film with tension both intimate and expansive, as family dynamics collide with survival instincts.

40 Acres 2025

Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a 91 percent critic score, 40 Acres speaks to contemporary anxieties about scarcity, ritual and land ownership, even as it honours its speculative setting. Vertigo’s theatrical release precedes availability on major digital platforms, offering UK horror and sci-fi fans a chance to witness Deadwyler’s commanding central turn on the big screen this summer.
