Kevin Bacon’s Demon Series ‘The Bondsman’ Gets the Axe

Kevin Bacon’s latest turn as a resurrected bounty hunter has been cut short. The Bondsman, Amazon MGM Studios’ horror-action series, has officially been cancelled after just one season, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

The show premiered on Prime Video on April 3 with eight episodes, landing modestly on Nielsen’s streaming chart in its first week with 563 million minutes viewed. Ranking ninth for the March 31–April 6 period, The Bondsman failed to hold ground in the weeks that followed, disappearing from the Top 10 entirely and ultimately not finding the sustained momentum that might have kept it alive.

Bacon played Hub Halloran, a washed-up country musician and bounty hunter brought back from the dead by the Devil to round up demons who’ve escaped from Hell. The series blended horror elements with rural noir and a surreal musical backdrop, placing chainsaws and country ballads side by side. The cast also included Jennifer Nettles, Damon Herriman, Beth Grant and Maxwell Jenkins.

Critics were divided. While Bacon’s performance drew praise, one of the show’s key weaknesses was its tonal imbalance. Despite dealing with dark subject matter clearly intended for mature audiences, the plot and character developments often felt overly simplistic, more in line with programming aimed at younger viewers.

Created by Grainger David, the show was produced by Blumhouse Television, Marker 96 and CrimeThink, with executive producers including Jason Blum, Erik Oleson, Paul Shapiro and Bacon himself. Oleson, who also served as showrunner, had described the project as a mash-up of genres – demon hunting, Appalachian noir, and family drama – that aimed to be “a fun, unique and original ride.”

While the concept had promise and a star-led marketing campaign, The Bondsman appears to have struggled to resonate with viewers beyond its initial drop. Despite the pedigree behind the camera and on screen, Amazon has opted not to move forward with a second season, a decision reflecting the increasing pressure streamers face to deliver immediate and consistent engagement.

The cancellation adds to a growing list of genre projects that have failed to secure longevity in the current streaming landscape, where high-concept storytelling often collides with rapidly shifting viewer priorities. For Bacon, it’s a swift end to a supernatural detour that briefly flirted with cult success but couldn’t quite seal the deal.
