British Horror Icon Hammer Films Celebrates 90 Years of Chilling Cinema
This November, Hammer Films marks an extraordinary milestone as it celebrates 90 years in the business of horror and beyond. Founded in 1934, the iconic British film studio remains one of the oldest in the industry, renowned for its indelible mark on horror cinema and for elevating gothic horror to an art form. To honour this remarkable anniversary, the studio has released Hammer: Heroes, Legends and Monsters, a new documentary from Deep Fusion Films that delves into the studio’s legacy, alongside the re-release of the cult classic Captain Kronos Vampire Hunter in its first-ever 4K restoration.

The documentary, now available on Sky Arts and streaming on NOW, brings together an impressive line-up of filmmakers and Hammer aficionados to recount the studio’s rise to cult status. Narrated by Charles Dance, Hammer: Heroes, Legends and Monsters revisits Hammer’s early days and traces its journey to becoming a defining force in horror cinema. From humble beginnings in London’s Regent Street, Hammer grew to worldwide prominence with its atmospheric sets and dark, sophisticated takes on traditional horror tales, making household names out of actors like Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee.
Hammer’s golden age arrived in the 1960s, with the release of classic sequels featuring Dracula and Frankenstein. During this period, Hammer introduced audiences to films like The Gorgon, The Plague of the Zombies, and thrillers Taste of Fear and Paranoiac, establishing its reputation for haunting, visually distinctive works that combined psychological depth with gothic horror.

With its unwavering commitment to atmospheric horror and psychological intrigue, Hammer Films has influenced generations of filmmakers and captivated horror fans worldwide. Hammer: Heroes, Legends and Monsters not only pays tribute to Hammer’s horror legacy but also provides an intimate portrait of the stars, directors, and unsung heroes behind the scenes who shaped the studio’s identity. Closing with a homage to Peter Cushing, one of Hammer’s most beloved figures, the documentary provides a fitting tribute to a studio that has left an indelible mark on cinema.
Today, the studio is experiencing a revival under the direction of John Gore, a British theatre producer who acquired Hammer in August 2023. Gore’s stewardship promises to carry forward Hammer’s unique vision, blending nostalgic touches with fresh innovations to appeal to modern audiences. Through this new documentary, fans and newcomers gain exclusive insight into Hammer’s enduring influence, with contributions from directors like Tim Burton, John Carpenter, Joe Dante, and John Logan, as well as Hammer stars and horror experts who share their perspectives on the studio’s legacy.
One of the highlights of this anniversary celebration is the re-release of Captain Kronos Vampire Hunter, Hammer’s swashbuckling 1974 vampire classic written and directed by Brian Clemens. Marking its 50th anniversary, Captain Kronos Vampire Hunter is now available for pre-order in a luxurious 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray collector’s edition. This meticulously restored version promises a high-definition experience faithful to Clemens’ original vision, remastered from the film’s original negatives. The release includes a leather-feel slipcase, debossed red foil titling, and a five-disc set featuring both UHD and Blu-ray editions.

As Hammer enters its ninth decade, fans can expect a blend of nostalgia and innovation from the new team. From Dracula’s dark allure to the fearless Captain Kronos, Hammer continues to be a force in horror, celebrating the magic of film through restoration and storytelling that remain as thrilling today as they were in Hammer’s heyday.

I had no idea that Hammer had been going that long. Going back a few years I was bought the Hammer boxset for one Christmas, and that was my introduction to the amazing films they created. Plague Of The Zombies and The Horror Of Frankenstein being two particular favourites.
