The Possessed (2021) Review

Inspired by a true story, possession feature from director Chris Sun follows exorcist Jacob (John Jarratt of Wolf Creek fame) and his nephew Liam (Lincoln Lewis) as they ‘clear’ Australia of demons.

For any seasoned horror fan, it’s clear that there is not a lot that hasn’t already been done when it comes to possession films but ‘The Possessed’ still manages to take a very saturated ‘sub genre’ and feel fun. A lot of this is down to the charming portrayal of accidental exorcist Jacob, a far cry from his murderous role in Wolf Creek.
There are elements of the film that feel could have been expanded – such as the seemingly normal housewives going for a lunch time ‘clearing’ which could have been a unique angle to explore that sadly didn’t go anywhere. Overall the film has some amusing dialogue and the relationship between Jacob and Liam oddly endearing.
As the credits roll, we are shown clips of the real man who inspired the film. The bizarre scenes feel like something Louis Theroux would feature during his ‘Weird Weekends’ series. As good as the film is, this inclusion actually made me a little sad the feature itself didn’t play up this ridiculousness.

There were definitely moments where the humour could have been enhanced and it may have led to the film being a little more memorable. As it stands, The Possessed is definitely a fun ride – but not one you’re likely to want to take again anytime soon.
