LoveHorror at FrightFest 2010 – Day 1/Part 2
After a brief toilet break I was back in my seat for a brief sneak peek at upcoming portmanteau picture Habeas Corpus which features a section made by Paul Davis director of the An American Werewolf in London documentary Beware the Moon. Focusing on the exploitation of the dead Davis described it by saying that in each story the monsters are the victims something rarely seen in horror and an interesting idea.
Up next was Ozploitation pic Primal another world premiere with a plot and style in the same vein as Cabin Fever it follows a gang of Aussie teens who journey to a jungle wilderness to examine some rarely seen primordial cave paintings.
After being attacked by a sharp toothed killer rabbit and having there car and tents destroyed by insects things get even weirder and terrifying when one of the group becomes infected by the water. At first feverish and agitated she soon transforms from human to beast with the same razor sharp teeth as the mutant bunny and begins attacking her friends.
Unable to escape or make sense of the situation the remaining mates must face the crazy and chaotic crisis they are thrown into, that to survive they must kill their former friend before she kills them.
Directed by newcomer Josh Reed this visceral movie is more than meets the eye with some original ideas and nasty moments balanced out with humour and pathos plus a primeval cave heavy on the evil filled with a nasty suprise that would give any Freudian scholar a field day.
The final film of the night was Brit gangster vampire pic Dead Cert described as “a splatter Disco Inferno as East End gangsters and Eastern European vampires battle it out for the ultimate prize. Foul-mouthed thugs take on a city infested with the undead in a super-modern take on ‘Dracula’ influenced by House of Hammer classics plus Fright Night and The Lost Boys.”
Another world premier and full of home-grown talent plus some familiar faces you will have to wait for LoveHorror’s verdict and our full review which will be coming soon.
Day one done I headed into the night to get a night bus home. With what I had seen it was going to be a great festival and I couldn’t wait to come back.
