The 81-minute feature will screen at Odeon Great Northern on 11 October as part of the festival’s newly launched Spanish Screams programme, with Català and lead actor Miguel Lago Casal set to attend. Grimmfest is also hosting the world premiere of the film’s trailer, positioning the release alongside its screening of John Carpenter’s The Fog elsewhere in the 2026 programme.

Set in Galicia in 1976, They Always Come At Night begins with an already strained family dinner and a series of increasingly frantic telephone calls from a neighbour who claims hooded figures are emerging from the mist.

The warning concerns A Santa Compaña, a spectral procession rooted in Galician folklore and associated with the souls of the dead. What initially appears to be paranoia gradually escalates into a ritualistic siege as long-buried tensions inside the family begin to surface. They Always Come at Night Grimmfest
Català both writes and directs, with Lucia Viga, Miguel Lago Casal, Paula Gallego and Daniel Arias leading the cast.

Grimmfest has highlighted the film’s connection to Spain’s political past, with the story unfolding during the final years of Francisco Franco’s rule and drawing on suppressed memories of violence from the Spanish Civil War.

That historical backdrop also gives the festival a clear reason for pairing the film with The Fog. While Carpenter’s 1980 classic expands its supernatural reckoning across an entire coastal town, They Always Come At Night narrows its focus to one family, using the arrival of the Santa Compaña to force its characters to confront questions of inherited guilt and responsibility.

The film is described as beginning closer to domestic drama and social comedy, as an affluent older couple meet their daughter’s lawyer boyfriend over dinner, before the evening gradually gives way to something much darker. As generational differences sharpen and the neighbour’s warnings become harder to dismiss, past crimes begin to bleed into the present.

They Always Come At Night forms part of Grimmfest’s broader 2026 push into contemporary Spanish genre cinema through Spanish Screams, giving Català’s feature a prominent world-premiere slot within the four-day festival.

You can catch the screening of They Always Come At Night when it receives its world premiere at Grimmfest on Sunday 11 October 2026 at 2.50pm at Odeon Great Northern, Manchester, with festival tickets available now.
