Wolf Creek 2 (2013) Review

It’s safe to say that when you heard about a sequel to 2005 nerve shredder Wolf Creek you probably thought; too little too late.

But nine years later Mick Taylor returns and it’s like he’s never been away. Sure the premise is now more straight forward and the shock factor is long dead but there’s lots of gory fun to be had with Wolf Creek 2.

Whereas the original used the slow burn approach and teased Mick’s foreboding presence for up to an hour before letting him loose, the sequel doesn’t mess about with the opening scene involving our favourite Aussie psycho.

Here Mick bumps into two very cocksure police officers who wrongfully accuse him of speeding and meet a very sticky end.

This time round our killer seems a lot more confident in himself too constantly cracking one liners like the outback’s own version of Freddy Krueger. After dispatching one of the officers from a far with his rifle a very ‘shot’ certainly raised a twisted chuckle.WOLFCREEK_DVD_3D

Director Greg McLean also returns from the original and certainly ramps up the action this time round with some wonderful car chase set pieces throughout and action aplenty; including a very unfortunate inclusion from some kangaroos.

While the finale loses its way a little with Mick’s game of cat and mouse wearing a little thin, there are still some surprises to be had. Not least his drinking and singing with the seemingly doomed Paul in his underground lair. Knocking the tension out of the situation slightly, McLean really does go a long way to show how crazy Mick really is.

There will be some out there who will ask why we need a Wolf Creek 2, but in a time when Freddy Krueger, Michael Myers and Jason Voorhees are conspicious by their absence the world needs a slasher and at present Mick Taylor is certainly up there with the biggest and baddest.

It may not be necessary but Wolf Creek 2 is well worth your time without ever trying to steal the crown of Aussie horror classic it’s predecessor claimed nine years ago.

Wolf Creek 3 anyone?
