Exclusive Interview: Jeffery Thompson, Lincoln Margison, Jonathan Reynolds, and Cliff Bleszinski discuss Soul Walker

We recently spoke to developer Jeffery Thompson and his team about his upcoming multiplayer horror video game, Soul Walker. Thompson is directing the game through his production company, Epoch Media Studios, with Lincoln Margison and Jonathan Reynolds both serving as his programmers. And Cliff Bleszinski is serving as the game’s creative consultant. Bleszinski is the creator of the Gears of War franchise for developer Epic Games and publisher Microsoft Studios, and over twenty million Gears of War games have been sold since the series debuted in 2006. Bleszinski also received no fewer than three BAFTA Games Awards for his work on the first three Gears of War games, making him one of the most popular developers in the industry. He also served as one of the lead designers of the popular Unreal series, which he also worked on for Epic Games, in addition to designing Bulletstorm, another Epic-developed game. Therefore, the fact that an A-list developer like Cliff Bleszinski is involved with Soul Walker will certainly help the game to earn a great deal of attention.

The multiplayer game will focus on humans trying to escape from monstrous entities known as Soul Walkers. Throughout each match, one player will control a human as they try to evade the creature which is hunting them, while the other player will take control of the Soul Walker as they attempt to catch and slaughter their prey. Matches will last for around two minutes in length, with the objective of the human players being to successfully avoid the Soul Walker before the timer concludes, with the player controlling the Soul Walker winning if they manage to kill the human within the time limit. After each match, players will then be given the option of playing again with the roles reversed, so you will be able to extract your vengeance if you controlled a human who was killed by a Soul Walker in the previous match.

In the video interview below, I had the pleasure of speaking with Thompson, Bleszinski, Margison, and Reynolds about Soul Walker. We talked for over thirty minutes about the game’s development and what fans can expect when they finally get a chance to play it for themselves. Bleszinski also revealed in the interview that he thinks the success of Deadpool & Wolverine at the box office last year proves that an R-rated Gears of War film could definitely work, but only time will tell if the film actually does get made. Either way, I talked with the four very talented individuals about everything there is to know about Soul Walker, and I made sure to ask questions about every single aspect of the production throughout the lengthy interview. Therefore, you will learn a great deal of Soul Walker after watching the video interview below, and it sounds like players will be in for a very unique horror experience when the game eventually arrives on Steam Early Access at some point in the near future. A console release is also planned, which means that Soul Walker is likely to reach the widest possible audience when it eventually receives a full release.
