‘Chronicles of Depression’ Heads To Romford With Preview Screening
A new British psychological horror, Chronicles of Depression, is set to receive a preview screening at the 2026 Romford Film Festival, with audiences also invited to take part in selecting the film’s official poster ahead of its wider release.

Directed by Lawrie Brewster, whose previous credits include Lord of Tears, the film will screen at the Lumiere Cinema in Romford on 24 May at 5pm, as part of the festival’s programme running from 22 to 25 May. The screening represents an interim stage in the project’s development, with filmmakers confirming that further refinements will follow before a planned crowdfunding campaign aimed at supporting distribution.
Produced by British Horror Studio, Chronicles of Depression signals a tonal shift for the company, moving towards a more restrained and psychologically driven approach. The film centres on institutional practices and the consequences of authority within psychiatric settings, drawing on historical influences while focusing on character-driven tension.
The cast is led by Ian McCulloch, whose work in Zombie Flesh Eaters and Contamination established him as a recognisable figure in genre cinema. He is joined by Megan Tremethick, Novarro Ramon, Dorian Todd and Michael Daviot, all of whom have previously collaborated with British Horror Studio. Brewster has pointed to McCulloch’s involvement as a key element in grounding the film’s central performances, particularly given the subject matter’s intensity.
The screenplay is written by Sam Ashurst, known for A Little More Flesh, with cinematography handled by Paul William Kelly. The production aims to balance period detail with a focus on psychological unease, placing emphasis on atmosphere and performance rather than overt spectacle.

Alongside the festival announcement, two contrasting poster designs have been released. One highlights the principal cast, while the other leans into abstract imagery tied to the film’s themes. Viewers are being encouraged to vote on which design will serve as the primary artwork, an approach that reflects the project’s ongoing engagement with its audience during development.
Founded in 2017, the Romford Film Festival has developed a reputation for showcasing independent productions from both emerging and established filmmakers. Hosted at Premiere Cinemas within The Mercury Mall, the event regularly features Q&A sessions and industry guests, providing a platform for projects such as Chronicles of Depression to reach early audiences.
The preview screening on 24 May will offer one of the first public opportunities to view the film in its current form, ahead of its next production phase. For more information, visit: romfordfilmfestival.com/sunday-24th-may-2026
