Cena and Elba Reunite to Save the World in ‘Heads of State’
Prime Video’s Heads of State will make its worldwide premiere on 2 July, positioning itself as one of the summer’s most high-profile digital releases. The film reunites John Cena and Idris Elba, last seen together in The Suicide Squad, in an entirely different setting. This time, the pair play the President of the United States and the British Prime Minister, respectively, forced into an uneasy alliance to prevent a worldwide catastrophe.

Directed by Ilya Naishuller, known for his stylised, kinetic work on Hardcore Henry and Nobody, Heads of State blends international espionage with buddy comedy elements, evoking the slick mayhem and mismatched partnerships of 90s action cinema. The film leans heavily into nostalgia, with a glossy, globe-trotting aesthetic and set-pieces that echo the genre’s heyday while giving it a modernised update.
Elba plays Prime Minister Sam Clarke, a sharp and stoic leader with little time for Cena’s Will Derringer, a brash and media-savvy US President. Publicly combative and privately antagonistic, the two heads of state find themselves targeted by a mysterious foreign enemy capable of outmanoeuvring their top security agencies. With their respective governments compromised, they must rely on each other, and on MI6 agent Noel Bisset, portrayed by Priyanka Chopra Jonas, to stay alive and stop a conspiracy with global consequences.

The supporting cast includes Paddy Considine, Jack Quaid, Stephen Root, Carla Gugino, and Sarah Niles, lending the film both comedic depth and international flair. Filming took place across the UK, Italy and Serbia, with key action sequences shot in Liverpool’s St George’s Hall and the streets of Trieste. The choice of locations underlines the film’s ambitious scale and commitment to practical effects-driven spectacle.
The project originated at Amazon Studios in 2020 and has been in active development since, drawing attention for its star pairing and genre-blending approach. While political thrillers and international capers are not new to streaming platforms, Heads of State sets itself apart by doubling down on the odd-couple dynamic at its core, aiming for the same chemistry that drove classics like Midnight Run and Lethal Weapon.

With Ilya Naishuller at the helm and a screenplay from Josh Appelbaum, André Nemec and Harrison Query, Heads of State is expected to deliver a tightly wound mix of stunts, gags and political parody. It also marks a further evolution in the careers of Cena and Elba, who continue to balance high-octane roles with more comedic fare.
Heads of State will be available to stream globally via Prime Video from 2 July.
