Dive Into Terror with ‘What Lurks Beneath’ This December
Prepare to dive into a claustrophobic nightmare. What Lurks Beneath, the latest feature from director Jamie Bailey, is set to surface on digital platforms from 13 December 2024. This chilling thriller blends the underwater suspense of The Hunt for Red October with the mythical intrigue of The Mermaid, creating a tense, genre-bending experience.

Set aboard the USS Titan, a nuclear submarine caught in the crosshairs of escalating tensions with Russia, the film begins with a shocking discovery. A mysterious, naked woman appears in one of the ship’s torpedo tubes, throwing the crew into a frenzy. While Captain Banks (played by Simon Phillips) initially suspects her to be a Russian spy, her unsettling nature suggests something far more sinister. What begins as a tale of espionage quickly unravels into a fight for survival as the crew faces a force that defies comprehension.
Bailey, known for his work on Deinfluencer and The Cove, shot the film entirely within the confined quarters of a submarine, amplifying its tension. Critics at the Buffalo Dreams Fantastic Film Festival were impressed, awarding What Lurks Beneath Best Picture and Best Director. The film’s visual style, helmed by Bailey and cinematographer Ryan Giesen, has been lauded for its ability to convey a sense of dread within the submarine’s claustrophobic setting.

Social media sensation Dela Reilley stars as the enigmatic stowaway, delivering a performance both captivating and menacing. Reilley is joined by a seasoned cast including Michael Swatton and Ryan Giesen, whose portrayals add depth to the crew’s escalating paranoia and fear.
Bailey has expressed his passion for creating immersive, character-driven horror. “This film explores how humans confront the unknown when all rationality is stripped away,” he explained. Drawing from influences like David Cronenberg and John Carpenter, Bailey sought to craft a film that melds psychological terror with dark thrills.

With a release perfectly timed for the cold depths of winter, What Lurks Beneath promises to leave audiences gripping their seats.Catch it from December 13th on digital platforms.
