‘The Monkey’ Brings Stephen King’s Toy Horror to Life with February Release

Stephen King’s work is once again poised to bring terror to audiences around the globe with the upcoming release of The Monkey, a new supernatural horror film based on the author’s 1980 short story. Directed by Osgood Perkins and produced by horror heavyweight James Wan (The Conjuring), the film is set to hit cinemas across the UK and Ireland on February 21, 2025.
The story follows twin brothers Hal and Bill, played by Theo James and Elijah Wood, who stumble upon their father’s old toy monkey while rummaging through the attic. The discovery marks the beginning of a series of gruesome and inexplicable deaths surrounding the siblings. The brothers, desperate to leave their childhood nightmare behind, dispose of the cursed toy and grow apart over the years. But when the deaths resurface, the two are forced to reunite and confront the supernatural threat in a terrifying final showdown.
This eerie adaptation has been long anticipated, with The Monkey being one of King’s lesser-known but highly atmospheric tales. Perkins, whose previous works include The Blackcoat’s Daughter and I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, is known for his quiet, brooding approach to horror, making him an intriguing choice to helm this project. Wan’s involvement as producer ensures that the film will have a slick, cinematic edge.
In addition to James and Wood, the cast features Tatiana Maslany (She-Hulk: Attorney at Law), Sarah Levy, Christian Convery, Colin O’Brien, and Rohan Campbell. With such a strong ensemble, The Monkey is promised to be a suspenseful journey that blends psychological dread with supernatural terror.
Principal photography for the film wrapped in March 2024, following a seven-week shoot in Vancouver. Fans of King’s work can look forward to a faithful yet fresh interpretation, as the film captures the essence of the original short story while introducing new elements to keep even longtime readers on their toes.
With most of us being very much focussed on the big batch of great horror releases this autumn/winter, it’s great to know that The Monkey will deliver a haunting experience to look forward to 2025.
