British Horror ‘The Moor’ Set to Premiere Across the UK This Summer

The Moor 2024

In the latest of a bunch of exciting horror releases slated for this summer, Bulldog Film Distribution has announced the release of its latest horror feature, The Moor, scheduled to debut in UK cinemas on 14th June and available on Digital HD from 1st July. The film, which marks the feature-length directorial debut of Chris Cronin, is generating significant buzz following its acclaimed screening at the Pigeon Shrine FrightFest.

The Moor features an impressive cast, including Sophia La Porta, David Edward-Robertson, and Elizabeth Dormer-Phillips, alongside the esteemed Bernard Hill in one of his final roles. The narrative centres around Claire, who was a child when her best friend was tragically abducted and murdered. Decades later, the convicted killer is set to be released, prompting Claire and Bill, the victim’s father, to revisit the haunting moors of Yorkshire—believed to be where the boy’s body lies. Aided by psychic Eleanor, their quest uncovers not only spectral remnants but also a menacing presence lurking in the shadows.

Director Chris Cronin has shared that his primary aim for the film was to delve into the psychological aftermath of violence and tragedy. “Instead of focusing on the fictional murders, my narrative explores the impact of unresolved grief and guilt on human lives and relationships,” Cronin stated. He expressed his desire to use the genre’s scope to amplify these human experiences, making the horror feel visceral and immediate for the audience.

The film’s reception at FrightFest was met with enthusiasm, where it was nominated for Best Director and Best Film, and triumphantly won Best Scare at Total Film’s FrightFest Awards 2023. Cronin’s approach, focusing on psychological tension and emotional fallout, distinguishes The Moor within the horror genre.

In anticipation of the release, several special screenings are scheduled across the UK, including a notable event on 14th June at City Screen Picturehouse in York, which will feature a Q&A session as part of the Dead Northern & Independent Horror Society’s A Midsummer Night’s Scream. Further Q&A sessions will take place at the Broadway in Nottingham on 19th June in collaboration with the Mayhem Film Festival, and another screening on 2nd July at DCA in Dundee, under the auspices of Dundead.
