James McAvoy Stars in Blumhouse’s Remake ‘Speak No Evil’

James McAvoy, celebrated for his dynamic roles in Split, Glass and It, is once again set to captivate audiences with his latest horror venture in the English-language remake of the Danish film Speak No Evil. Produced by Blumhouse, the film is slated for a theatrical release on September 13.
In Speak No Evil, McAvoy portrays Paddy, a perfection-obsessed father, alongside Aisling Franciosi as his wife, Ciara. The story escalates when the couple, along with their mute son Ant, played by Daniel Hough, invite an American family to their picturesque country estate. The seemingly idyllic weekend quickly devolves into a disturbing psychological nightmare as their guests, portrayed by Mackenzie Davis, Scoot McNairy, and Alix West Lefler, uncover more than they bargained for.
This gripping narrative is adapted from the 2022 Danish horror hit Gæsterne, penned by Christian Tafdrup and Mads Tafdrup, which received significant acclaim, including 11 nominations at the Danish Film Awards. The remake is directed by James Watkins, who introduced the trailer at CinemaCon 2024.

The production reunites McAvoy with Franciosi, who are also co-stars in the upcoming improvised comedy Turn Up the Sun! The film is supported by Blumhouse’s Jason Blum and Paul Ritchie, with Beatriz Sequeira, Jacob Jarek, and Christian Tafdrup serving as executive producers.
Speak No Evil is part of Universal’s lineup, where Blumhouse holds a first-look deal. The company also announced plans at CinemaCon to remake several Lionsgate horror classics, beginning with “The Blair Witch Project.”
This release comes at a time when English-language remakes are gaining traction, highlighted by the new Cannes Remakes program at the Cannes Film Festival. This initiative aims to capitalise on the robust intellectual property market, fueled by global streaming investments, by offering proven narratives with a track record of success.
