In a Violent Nature Trailer POV: You’re the Killer

In a Violent Nature

IFC Films and Shudder pair up to deliver an innovative addition to the beloved slasher genre with In a Violent Nature. Written and directed by Chris Nash, the highly awaited “ambient slasher” premiered at Sundance earlier this year and will be coming to theaters on May 31st. This along with the other highly anticipated IFC/Shudder vehicle, Late Night with the Devil has horror fans feeling spoiled this spring.

The film follows Johnny, played by Ry Barrett, through an animalistic, undead, rampage. Fueled by vengeance, he will hack his way through all the trees and bodies in the woods until his retribution. The supporting cast, which will presumably be up against the foreboding golem, is Andrea Pavlovic, Cameron Love, Reece Presley, Liam Leone, Charlotte Creaghan, Lea Rose Sebastianis, Sam Roulston, Alexander Oliver, Timothy Paul McCarthy, and Lauren-Marie Taylor.

The trailer shows that the audience will have an over-the-shoulder look at all the brutality he delves out against a lush wooded background. A slasher flick from the killer’s point-of-view is not a brand new concept, but the slow pace and unyielding camera will give In a Violent Nature a particularly sharp edge.

The influence of classic slashers like Friday the 13th is very clear but this trailer does not hint at a total replication of the iconic franchise. Johnny’s design and mystery along with the film’s setting are where the similarities end. The juxtaposition of the sunlit, serene forest with the cracking of bone creates such an unsettling tone and anticipation that will have audiences on the edge of their seat.

The trailer almost feels like a documentary that shows how apex predators stalk their prey. The slow-paced, easy way the camera follows Johnny to the next victim is so captivating that it will be hard to look away when the inevitable gore begins. This gives the slasher a different hue than its many predecessors and will be sure to make audiences wince all the same.
