‘Fear City’ Makes its UK Blu-ray Debut with Bloody Bonus Features

Fear City 1984

101 Films is set to excite the UK with the first-ever Blu-ray release of Abel Ferrara’s gritty 1984 neo-noir thriller, Fear City, on 4th March 2024. This limited edition offering will not only feature the theatrical cut but also the uncut version of the film, providing fans with the complete, raw experience as Ferrara intended. Accompanying the films are a fresh commentary track and a booklet filled with new essays by film experts Rich Johnson and Brad Stevens, diving deep into the movie’s dark themes and its place in cinematic history.

Fear City marks Ferrara’s return to the neon-lit streets of New York following the success of The Driller Killer (1979) and Ms. 45 (1981). With the backing of 20th Century Fox, Ferrara was able to assemble a dazzling cast of 80s icons, including Tom Berenger (Platoon), Melanie Griffith (Body Double), and Billy Dee Williams (Empire Strikes Back). However, the film’s explicit content led to its departure from Fox to the independent Aquarius Releasing, followed by significant cuts to satisfy the MPAA before its eventual premiere in 1984.

Set against Ferrara’s nightmarish vision of New York City, Fear City explores the seedy underbelly of the 80s, capturing the essence of Times Square’s dive bars and back alleys. The film follows a group of exotic dancers managed by former boxer Matt Rossi (Berenger) and his partner Nicky Parzeno (Jack Scalia), who find themselves the targets of a brutal killer. With Rossi’s past haunting him and the lives of those he cares about in jeopardy, Fear City delves into a world of violence, survival, and redemption.
