In a world filled with video game adaptations, one game’s sinister allure has held fans in suspense for years: Five Nights at Freddy’s. Now, after a tumultuous journey from the digital domain to the silver screen, Five Nights at Freddy’s is finally set to terrify audiences in theaters and on Peacock in the United States on October 27, 2023, courtesy of Universal Pictures.

Five Nights at Freddy’s originated as a popular video game series, which was created by Scott Cawthon. The franchise, known for its chilling animatronics and jump-scare gameplay, quickly garnered a dedicated fan base since its debut in 2014. The idea of translating this eerie game into a film began in 2015 when Warner Bros. Pictures acquired the film rights, with Roy Lee, David Katzenberg, and Seth Grahame-Smith set to produce the adaptation. Grahame-Smith expressed the team’s desire to work with Cawthon to create an “insane, terrifying, and weirdly adorable movie”.

However, the path to the movie’s creation was far from smooth. Warner Bros. Pictures put the project in turnaround in 2017, and Cawthon announced Blumhouse Productions as the film’s new production company. The film experienced several changes in the director’s chair, with Chris Columbus replacing Gil Kenan, only to leave the project himself in 2021. Eventually, Emma Tammi stepped in as Columbus’ replacement in October 2022 and co-wrote the screenplay alongside Cawthon and Seth Cuddeback.

Under Emma Tammi’s direction, Five Nights at Freddy’s promises to bring the game’s signature blend of horror and suspense to life. The film stars Josh Hutcherson, Elizabeth Lail, Piper Rubio, and Matthew Lillard, with a cameo from gaming YouTuber CoryxKenshin. The plot follows a troubled security guard who takes a night-time job at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, a once-successful family entertainment center, only to discover that its four animatronic mascots come to life and become deadly after midnight.
