‘Resident Evil’ Comes Home Tomorrow After Huge $400 Million Cinema Run

Raccoon City is coming home. Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil will be available to buy or rent on digital platforms from 3 November, giving audiences another chance to step into the filmmaker’s new take on Capcom’s survival horror franchise after a theatrical run that has taken the film to $400 million worldwide.

Resident Evil 2026

Directed by Cregger and co-written with Shay Hatten, Resident Evil follows Austin Abrams as Bryan, a medical courier whose routine delivery to Raccoon City General Hospital turns into a desperate fight for survival when a viral outbreak transforms the surrounding area into a nightmare of infected creatures and escalating mutations.

Rather than adapting one of the games directly, the film tells an original story set against the familiar backdrop of Raccoon City. Cregger has described the project as a “love letter to the games”, with the movie drawing heavily on the experience of playing through the series rather than simply recreating existing characters or storylines.

That approach places Bryan firmly at the centre of the chaos. He begins the night badly underprepared, armed with little more than instinct, before being forced to adapt as the situation worsens around him. Elements familiar to players also appear throughout, including ammunition management, weapon upgrades, healing items, green herbs, locked areas requiring specific keys and even a typewriter.

The film’s supporting cast includes Zach Cherry as Umbrella scientist Carl, Kali Reis as Maxine and Paul Walter Hauser as Paul. Will Merrick, Jo Martin, Emily Piggford and Johnno Wilson also appear, while Sara Paxton provides the voice of Bryan’s girlfriend Michelle.

Cregger arrived at Resident Evil following the success of Barbarian and Weapons, but the new film shifts his focus towards a more sustained survival-horror structure. He has compared its energy more closely to Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead II, with the film increasingly pushing Bryan through violent encounters as his chances of escaping Raccoon City narrow.

The reboot was first announced in early 2025, with Constantin Film producing alongside PlayStation Productions and Vertigo Entertainment. Sony Pictures ultimately secured distribution rights following reported interest from several studios, including Warner Bros. and Netflix.

The film premiered in Los Angeles on 15 September before opening in US cinemas on 18 September. By 1 November, Resident Evil had grossed $157 million in the US and Canada and a further $243 million internationally, taking its worldwide total to $400 million. The result makes it the highest-grossing film in the Resident Evil franchise to date as well as Cregger’s biggest box office success.

For anyone who missed its cinema run, the wait is now almost over. Resident Evil will be available to buy or rent on digital platforms from 3 November 2026 through Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.
