‘Mum, I’m Alien Pregnant’ Uncorks Gooey Body Horror on Digital This November

Pregnancy is difficult enough without discovering that the father may not be entirely human. New Zealand filmmaking duo Thunderlips take that complication to spectacularly messy extremes in Mum, I’m Alien Pregnant, a sci-fi body-horror comedy heading to digital platforms in November following an international festival run that began at Sundance.

The film stars Hannah Lynch as Mary, a directionless millennial who unexpectedly finds herself pregnant with something decidedly extraterrestrial. With doctors unwilling to believe her, an unreliable baby daddy offering little help and a mother incapable of keeping anything to herself, Mary is forced to take control of a situation that becomes increasingly strange, physical and potentially dangerous.

Written, directed and edited by Thunderlips, the filmmaking partnership behind the project, Mum, I’m Alien Pregnant expands their 2024 short Help, I’m Alien Pregnant into a feature-length story. Lynch returns to the central role after starring in the original short.

The film marks Thunderlips’ feature debut after more than a decade working across music videos, commercials and short-form filmmaking. The duo have picked up numerous awards for their music video work, including four consecutive Best Music Video wins at New Zealand’s Show Me Shorts between 2014 and 2017, as well as a Best New Director nomination at the UK Music Video Awards.

Lynch leads a cast that also includes Arlo Green, Yvette Parsons, Jackie Van Beek and Jonny Brugh. Several of the performers arrive with strong comedy and genre credentials, with Parsons, Van Beek and Brugh having previously appeared in projects connected to What We Do in the Shadows. Lynch’s own credits include The Rule of Jenny Pen, Petrol, The Wilds and Power Rangers.

Behind the absurd premise sits a project born partly from lived experience, with the filmmakers using alien pregnancy as the foundation for a story that pushes bodily autonomy, medical frustration and messy family dynamics through a deliberately outrageous genre filter.

Mum, I’m Alien Pregnant made its world premiere in the Midnight section of the 2026 Sundance Film Festival in January before continuing its travels through Germany’s Fantasy Filmfest, Finland’s Night Visions Film Festival and Sydney Film Festival. The film subsequently opened in New Zealand in September.

That festival run now gives way to a wider digital release, offering audiences the chance to discover a feature that combines extraterrestrial biology with the indignities of adulthood, motherhood and relationships while embracing plenty of practical-looking goo along the way.

Mum, I’m Alien Pregnant will be available on digital platforms from 2 November 2026 through Blue Finch Films.
