‘Tetsuo: The Bullet Man’ Reloads for a Limited Blu-ray Release

Tetsuo: The Bullet Man brings Shinya Tsukamoto’s industrial nightmare back into circulation this month, with Unearthed Films issuing the third entry in the filmmaker’s cult cyberpunk trilogy as a Limited Collector’s Edition Blu-ray, which is out now.

Tetsuo: The Bullet Man

First released in 2009, the English-language Japanese body horror follows Anthony, an American living in Tokyo whose life is destroyed when his young son is deliberately killed. Grief rapidly gives way to something far stranger as Anthony’s body begins transforming into metal, turning buried anger into a biomechanical weapon.

The film stands as a standalone follow-up to Tetsuo: The Iron Man and Tetsuo II: Body Hammer, completing the loose trilogy that established Tsukamoto as one of Japanese genre cinema’s most distinctive filmmakers. While the earlier films built their identities around frantic editing, urban decay and extreme physical transformation, The Bullet Man expanded the series into a larger story involving military experiments, inherited trauma and the weaponisation of the human body.

Eric Bossick stars as Anthony, with Akiko Mon? as Yuriko, Y?ko Nakamura as Mitsue, Stephen Sarrazin as Ride and Tsukamoto himself appearing as the mysterious Yatsu. Tiger Charlie Gerhardt and Prakhar Jain also feature, while Tomorowo Taguchi, who appeared in both earlier Tetsuo films, makes a brief appearance.

The new Region A release includes the feature in a 1.77:1 presentation with 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio, alongside English and Japanese dialogue options and English subtitles. Its most substantial extra is an audio commentary featuring Bossick and Japanese cinema writer Tom Mes, offering context on the film’s production, Tsukamoto’s methods and the wider legacy of the trilogy.

Also included is Tetsuo: The Bullet Man Multi Material Version, an alternate assembly of the film using additional imagery and a revised structure. Promotional galleries and trailers complete the disc.

Tsukamoto had considered an American-set third Tetsuo film for years before production finally moved forward. An earlier incarnation reportedly involved Quentin Tarantino as a potential producer, though that version collapsed before filming. The completed project eventually retained an international cast while remaining firmly rooted in Tsukamoto’s visual language and his interest in bodies pushed beyond recognisable human limits.

The soundtrack was composed by longtime collaborator Chu Ishikawa, while the closing credits feature an original track by Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor. That collaboration fulfilled a long-held ambition for Tsukamoto, whose work has often shared the abrasive industrial textures associated with Reznor’s music.

Tetsuo: The Bullet Man is available in a Limited Collector’s Edition Blu-ray from Unearthed Films from 14 July 2026.
