‘The Vile’ Brings Psychological Horror and Regional Tensions to Global Stage
Majid Al Ansari returns to Fantastic Fest with The Vile, a harrowing psychological thriller and supernatural horror steeped in regional specificity and emotional depth. The film, which had its world premiere this week in Austin, is Al Ansari’s first feature since Zinzana (Rattle the Cage), and the first Arabic-language Emirati production under the banner of Spooky Pictures and Image Nation Abu Dhabi’s ongoing collaboration.

At the core of The Vile is the emotional fallout that occurs when Khalid, a father and husband, introduces a second wife into the family home. What begins as domestic tension soon escalates into psychological collapse as Amani, his first wife, becomes consumed by paranoia and dread. Her daughter, Noor, watches helplessly as their once familiar home turns unrecognisable. But it is Zahra, the new wife, who seems to carry a presence far darker than expected.
Al Ansari has deliberately positioned the film as an exploration of trauma, secrecy and emotional erosion, rather than a didactic statement on polygamy. His process included conducting in-depth interviews with women affected by similar experiences, a research phase he considered critical to achieving authenticity. The result is a film that dissects gender power dynamics in Middle Eastern households while using horror as a framework to visualise internalised fear.
The production boasts an impressive international team, including editors Ghalya Lacroix (Blue is the Warmest Colour) and Hafedh Laridhi (Streams), cinematographer Benjamin Kirk Nielsen (Watcher), and production designer Benedikt Lange (Zinzana). The cast is led by Bdoor Mohammed as Amani, Sarah Taibah as Zahra and Iman Doghoz as Noor. Supporting performances come from Jassem AlKharraz, Nora Ali, Saeed AlHarsh and Samira Al Wahaibi.

The Vile is produced by Roy Lee (Barbarian) and Steven Schneider (Split, Paranormal Activity) for Spooky Pictures, with Image Nation’s Derek Dauchy and Breakout Films’ Rami Yasin also producing. Mohamed Hefzy of Film Clinic and Yasir Alyasiri serve as executive producers.
Thematically rooted in the psychological horror of Fatal Attraction and the domestic unease of Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?, the film pivots between eerie atmospherics and visceral discomfort.
Following its premiere at Fantastic Fest, The Vile is set for theatrical release in the UAE via Vox Independent Distribution on 30 October. Post-theatrical rights in the MENA region are being handled by Film Clinic.
