‘Sinners’ Returns in IMAX 70mm for BFI Halloween Horror Programme

Roger Corman’s hundredth birthday is giving the BFI an excuse to go gloriously deep into horror history this autumn, with a six-week Southbank retrospective sitting at the centre of a BFI Halloween programme that also brings Sinners, The Shining, Donnie Darko, Dracula and the long-awaited definitive version of Ken Russell’s The Devils back to the big screen.

Running across BFI Southbank and BFI IMAX, the season will celebrate Corman’s centenary with Movie Maverick: 100 Years of Roger Corman, examining a career that stretched across directing, producing, distribution and acting while helping launch or support generations of filmmakers.

A major strand will revisit Corman’s celebrated Edgar Allan Poe adaptations, including House of Usher, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Raven and The Masque of the Red Death. His wife and producer Julie Corman will appear at BFI Southbank for an illustrated conversation on 12 November before introducing House of Usher on 14 November. Their daughters Catherine and Mary Corman will also attend, introducing The Wild Angels and A Bucket of Blood respectively.

Beyond Corman, the BFI IMAX Halloween weekend offers a sizeable genre line-up. Ryan Coogler’s Sinners returns in IMAX 70mm on 30 and 31 October, Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein screens on 30 October, and Donnie Darko celebrates its 25th anniversary on Halloween itself. Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining follows on 1 November, while late-night screenings include The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu.

BFI Southbank will meanwhile host a preview of Ghosts: The Possession of Button House on 21 October, followed by a Q&A, before Reece Shearsmith presents George A. Romero’s Creepshow on 30 October. Halloween night brings Hammer’s Dracula: Restored and Uncut, with the new 4K restoration reinstating footage that had remained unseen outside Japan since 1958.

One of the programme’s biggest restoration events arrives with Ken Russell’s The Devils. The film returns from 30 October in a definitive 4K version cut to Russell’s specific direction, with preview screenings from a new 35mm print running between 23 and 29 October. A screening of documentary Hell on Earth: The Desecration and Resurrection of The Devils on 9 November will include a Q&A with Mark Kermode and director Paul Joyce.

There is also room for family-friendly horror, with Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie screening on several dates alongside Corpse Bride, while Godzilla Minus Zero reaches BFI IMAX from 3 November following its UK premiere at the BFI London Film Festival.
