There are bad rebound decisions, and then there is accidentally ending the evening with a 20-inch exploding penis. That is the spectacularly unfortunate scenario at the centre of The Sorrows of Young Charlotte, Shir Ariya’s new British short film, which is heading to Tubi FrightFest for its world premiere on Monday. Romantic miscommunication provides the spark, but Ariya and her collaborators have devised a considerably more physical way of demonstrating what happens when an awkward conversation gets completely out of hand. The 14-minute dark comedy follows Charlie, who is struggling after a recent break-up when she meets her friend Werther for coffee. A conversation about her former relationship becomes flirtatious, coffee turns into drinks and the pair eventually return to Charlie’s home for what she regards as meaningless rebound sex. Things become complicated when Werther is unable to perform and discovers potency pills belonging to Charlie’s ex-boyfriend. He takes a double dose, which solves one problem rather more effectively than intended. The real trouble arrives afterwards. Werther admits that he is in love with Charlie, only to discover that she does not share his feelings. Their argument escalates while his drug-induced erection continues growing to grotesque proportions, leaving emotional embarrassment increasingly secondary to a rather urgent medical situation. Eventually, and with little room for delicacy here, his penis explodes. ‘I love the awkwardness and absurdity of modern relationships, particularly when people have no idea how to communicate,’ Ariya said. ‘This felt like a good opportunity to make that problem someone else’s physical nightmare.’ Ariya is a Thai filmmaker based in the UK whose work combines character-led comedy with darker turns. Her previous shorts include The Stain, I’m Interesting I Swear and Crab No. 7, the latter of which was selected for the BFI London Film Festival. The Sorrows of Young Charlotte and her latest short, The Pleasure of Being Held, were both made as part of the Directing Fiction course at the National Film and Television School. For Ariya, the extremity of The Sorrows of Young Charlotte grew from something considerably more ordinary. In the film she identifies romantic miscommunication, toxic attachment and repeated patterns within dysfunctional relationships as central concerns, particularly characters who want intimacy but cannot communicate what they actually need. In this instance, that emotional impasse happens to culminate in an anatomical catastrophe that is unlikely to be forgotten quickly. The Sorrows of Young Charlotte receives its world premiere as part of Short Film Showcase 4: UK & Ireland at Tubi FrightFest on Monday 31 August 2026, screening at Odeon Luxe West End’s Discovery Screen One from 1.05pm.
