The Edinburgh International Film Festival’s Midnight Madness strand returns for its second year with an expanded line-up of six audacious titles designed to electrify late-night audiences. Running from 14–20 August, the programme blends world premieres, UK debuts and a European premiere, delivering everything from surreal lo-fi horrors to anarchic reimaginings of cult classics. Leading the pack is the world premiere of Bulk, the latest from British filmmaker Ben Wheatley. A quintessential midnight movie, it is described as wildly inventive, darkly funny and entirely unpredictable, drawing from a collage of influences that range from Airfix models to Thunderbirds. Wheatley’s reputation for bending genres suggests audiences can expect the unexpected. Dead Lover (UK Premiere) offers a lo-fi, punk-flavoured riff on Frankenstein. Grace Glowicki’s surreal debut follows a grief-stricken gravedigger who reanimates her drowned partner, creating a grotesquely tender meditation on love and transformation, shot entirely on 16mm. In I Live Here Now (UK Premiere), Julie Pacino plunges viewers into a derelict hotel where a young woman confronts nightmarish visions from her past. A darkly humorous psychological horror, it interrogates identity and female pain within a shifting, dreamlike reality. Odyssey (European Premiere) pivots to crime and pitch-black comedy. Directed by Gerard Johnson, it stars Polly Maberly as Natasha, a ruthless real estate agent spiralling into debt, drug binges and violent confrontations with dangerous gangsters. Its taut pacing and razor-edged humour keep the tension high. Redux Redux (UK Premiere) pushes the revenge thriller into the multiverse. Directed by Matthew and Kevin McManus, it follows a grieving mother trapped in an endless cycle of vengeance across parallel realities, blending emotional intensity with gritty, inventive world-building. Closing the line-up, The Toxic Avenger (UK Premiere) sees Macon Blair reinvent the cult 1980s splatter-comedy. Featuring Peter Dinklage, Elijah Wood and Kevin Bacon, the film turns a hapless middle-aged man’s accident with chemical waste into a staggering, gleefully violent odyssey of revenge. With its mix of experimental debuts, high-concept thrillers and cult revivals, this year’s Midnight Madness cements its place as a cornerstone of EIFF’s after-hours programming.
