Darren Lynn Bousman made his name directing Saw II to IV and then turned his hand to something almost entirely different with Repo! The Genetic Opera a surreal splatter punk rock opera staring Paul Sorvino, Anthony Stewart Head, Sarah Brightman and Paris Hilton.
Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson’s, third feature film, The Endless kickstarted the weekend portion of Abertoir for me. The screening marked my second viewing of the film having previously seen it at Celluloid Screams in Sheffield.
Abertoir would not feel right without a Vincent Price film amongst the line-up! He is of course the festival’s official patron saint, as appointed by his daughter Victoria who attended the festival in 2011 and 2015, respectively. Team Abertoir selected a film that proved vital to 2017’s giallo theme, Roger Corman’s Tales of Terror.
Creepy (2016) is the latest thriller from director Kiyoshi Kurosawa, best known for Pulse (2001) and The Cure (1997). Following a horrific incident, Takakura (Hidetoshi Nishijima) leaves his his job as a police detective and begins a new role as a university lecturer in the field of criminal psychology.
