‘The Texas Chain Saw Massacre’ Returns to Cinemas for Texas Chain Saw Day

Leatherface is heading back to the big screen this summer as Dark Sky Films and Fathom Entertainment bring back Texas Chain Saw Day, giving horror fans across the United States another opportunity to experience The Texas Chain Saw Massacre in cinemas for one night only.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 1974

The annual event returns on 18 August following the success of its inaugural outing in 2025, when the restored classic screened in more than 900 cinemas nationwide and finished the day as the second highest-grossing horror title at the domestic box office.

Held on the date the events of the film are said to take place, Texas Chain Saw Day celebrates Tobe Hooper’s landmark 1974 horror with a nationwide theatrical presentation of the film in a new 4K restoration. The one-night event has quickly established itself as a fixture on the horror calendar, bringing together audiences to revisit one of the genre’s most enduring classics in a communal cinema setting.

“Last year’s response exceeded our expectations and proved that audiences still want to experience The Texas Chain Saw Massacre the way it was meant to be seen, together, on the big screen,” said Justin DiPietro, Executive Vice President of MPI and Dark Sky Films. “We’re thrilled to make Texas Chain Saw Day an annual event and continue celebrating a film whose impact on horror and popular culture remains unmatched.”

Ray Nutt, Chief Executive Officer of Fathom Entertainment, added: “Texas Chain Saw Day captures everything that makes moviegoing special: passionate fans, a beloved film and the shared excitement of experiencing it together in a theatre. Fathom is pleased to partner with Dark Sky Films and establish an annual tradition.”

More than 50 years after its original release, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre continues to occupy a singular place in horror history. The film was selected for preservation by the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry and remains a touchstone for generations of filmmakers. Its influence continues to be felt today, with Obsession director Curry Barker, who is attached to direct A24’s forthcoming reimagining of the franchise, recently citing Hooper’s original as a key inspiration.
