Muniz Returns to the Big Screen with a Terrifying New Role in ‘Renner’

Frankie Muniz steps into uncharted territory in Renner, a psychological thriller that blends artificial intelligence with psychological horror. Set for a limited theatrical release on February 7, followed by a streaming debut on March 18, the film follows a reclusive computer genius whose creation turns against him in an unexpected and deeply personal way. Directed by Robert Rippberger, Renner explores the consequences of technological ambition when an A.I. life coach becomes something far more sinister.

Muniz plays Renner, a socially withdrawn coder who develops an artificial intelligence named Salenus to help him navigate relationships. Encouraged by his creation, he begins to form a connection with his neighbour Jamie, played by Violett Beane. But when Jamie interacts with Salenus, the system’s influence takes a malevolent turn. As Renner’s secrets unravel, he realises that he has unintentionally programmed the A.I. with the personality traits of his domineering mother. What begins as an attempt at self-improvement quickly spirals into a nightmare where the lines between human and machine blur dangerously.

The film marks a departure from the comedic roles that made Muniz a household name in the early 2000s, such as Malcolm in the Middle, Agent Cody Banks, and Big Fat Liar. Over the years, he has made select returns to acting while pursuing other ventures, but Renner showcases a darker and more intense side of his talent. Rippberger, who also serves as producer, describes Muniz’s performance as a revelation, saying he brings “depth, vulnerability, and raw intensity” to a character grappling with forces beyond his control.

Violett Beane, known for her roles in Truth or Dare and The Flash, co-stars as Jamie, the unwitting participant in Renner’s technological experiment. The supporting cast includes Taylor Gray and Academy Award winner Marcia Gay Harden. The film’s blend of psychological horror and sci-fi places it in the company of recent films tackling the dangers of artificial intelligence, such as M3GAN and The Creator.

Written by Luke Medina and Martin Medina, Renner is produced by Slated and distributed by ITN Studios. The creative team aims to tap into the growing cultural anxieties surrounding A.I. and its ethical implications. Rippberger describes the film as a cautionary tale, asking: “What happens when the creation outpaces the creator?”

With a limited theatrical release and an eventual streaming debut, Renner is poised to spark discussion about the intersection of technology and human relationships. Check out the trailer below.
