‘Blood Star’ Brings Tense Survival Drama to Grimmfest and Digital Platforms

One of the many films we’re excited about seeing in the coming weeks is the dark survival thriller Blood Star. The film is set to make its UK debut at Grimmfest on 6th October, followed by a digital release across major platforms the very next day, 7th October. Directed by Lawrence Jacomelli and featuring a gripping performance by Britni Camacho (I’m A Virgo), this tense thriller promises to deliver a nerve-wracking cat-and-mouse chase with a powerful message. The film also stars John Schwab (Master of the Air), Sydney Brumfield, and Travis Lincoln Cox.

Blood Star follows the story of Bobbi Torres (Camacho), a young woman driving through the desert to reunite with her abusive boyfriend. Her plans are violently interrupted when a small-town Sheriff, played by Schwab, shoots her off the road, triggering a deadly game of survival. What ensues is a high-stakes chase through the barren landscape, where Bobbi must rely on her street-smarts to outwit the sheriff, who has far more sinister intentions than anyone could have imagined.

The film not only delivers edge-of-your-seat thrills but also tackles significant social themes. Jacomelli’s directorial vision is deeply rooted in addressing violence against women, coercive control, and abuse of power—an issue brought to the forefront in the wake of real-life events like the George Floyd case and Sarah Everard tragedy.

Blood Star explores the brutal reality of violence against women, while addressing the corruption of authority figures who should be protecting the vulnerable,” explains Jacomelli. “We wanted the audience to feel the isolation, the fear, and the silence of those who have been silenced.”

Shot in the deserts of New Mexico, Blood Star was created on a modest budget in just 10 days. Despite the challenges that came with indie filmmaking—such as sandstorms, car breakdowns, and unforeseen location issues—the passion and resilience of the crew brought the film to life. “It’s a story not just about survival on screen, but about the survival of the project itself,” shares producer Victoria Hinks Taylor, who co-wrote the screenplay.

The film’s stark desert setting enhances the sense of isolation and the terrifying reality Bobbi faces, making the atmosphere all the more oppressive. Jacomelli’s decision to scar the heroine, both physically and emotionally, speaks to the enduring scars survivors of violence must live with.

The premiere at Grimmfest will offer fans a chance to experience Blood Star on the big screen, with director Jacomelli and the cast in attendance for a post-screening Q&A. For those unable to attend, the film will be available on digital platforms such as Apple TV, Google Play, and Prime Video starting 7th October.
