‘Incomplete Chairs’ Turns Designer Furniture Into a Body-Horror Nightmare

Furniture shopping gets a grotesque new meaning in Incomplete Chairs, Kenichi Ugana’s Japanese body-horror satire about a craftsman whose search for the perfect chair leads him towards murder, human remains and a very particular idea of artistic perfection. The film will stream exclusively on BloodStream this month, arriving in both its original Japanese-language version and an English dub.

Set in Tokyo, Incomplete Chairs stars Ryu Ichinose as Shinsuke Kujo, a craftsman obsessed with creating the ultimate chair. His methods are far removed from conventional design, however, with Kujo luring job applicants to his studio before incorporating human bones and skin into his work.

The situation begins to unravel when chair buyer Natsuko Kato, played by Ryoka Oshima, becomes increasingly curious about Kujo’s creations. Her questions eventually draw her and bar owner Masaki Uchida, played by Akito Fujii, towards the horrifying truth behind the furniture and the man responsible for making it.

Ugana’s film combines extreme body horror with black comedy, using its grisly central idea to take aim at consumerism, status and the pressure to create something unique at any cost.

“Incomplete Chairs is the most extreme horror film I’ve ever seen which also caused me to laugh out loud,” said BloodStream lead programmer Clark Collis. “Kenichi Ugana has created a must-see movie that will have viewers on the edge of their, yes, seats until the very end.”

The film arrives on the platform after an extensive festival run. Incomplete Chairs made its world premiere at Austria’s SLASH Film Festival in 2025 before screening at Montreal’s Festival du nouveau cinéma, Brooklyn Horror and Grimmfest.

Its Grimmfest appearance proved particularly successful, with the film winning Best SFX and Ichinose receiving a Special Mention for Best Actor in a Male Role.

Ugana has become an increasingly visible name in international Japanese genre cinema. His previous feature The Gesuidouz was selected for Toronto International Film Festival’s Midnight Madness programme in 2024, while his other credits include Visitors: Complete Edition, Love Will Tear Us Apart and The Curse.

The BloodStream release will give Incomplete Chairs its next international platform ahead of a planned wider release through The Horror Collective, with further dates still to be announced.

Incomplete Chairs streams exclusively on BloodStream from 15 October 2026 in North America, the UK, Australia and New Zealand, available in both Japanese with subtitles and an English-language dub.
