Poor zombies. As if being dead and perpetually hungry wasn’t bad enough, no other horror movie villain gets as inhumanely splattered as these tragic antagonists.
The demise of the zombie clown is one of the goriest and funniest moments in Dead Rising: Watchtower – the brilliant new zombie film based on Capcom’s best-selling videogame franchise. In tribute to the inventive kills from this new international release, we have picked 10 of our favourite zombie deaths ever to splatter up the big screen (including that special clown scene of course)! Enjoy…
WARNING: EXTREME GORE!
Top 10 Zombie Deaths
1. CLOWN TAKES A GRILLE-ING
“Clown takes a grille-ing” – Dead Rising: Watchtower (2015)
Getting slammed by a van is one thing. Getting your decomposing head caught in its grille is another… Not that Jesse Metcalfe is complaining!
“Shark vs Zombie” – Zombie Flesh Eaters (1979)
Surreal underwater nastiness from a macabre Italian classic, in which a zombie bites off more than it can chew – but almost wins!
3. ZOMBIE LAWNMOWER MASSACRE
“Zombie lawnmower massacre” – Braindead (aka Dead Alive) (1992)
80 gallons of fake blood were spilled in the shoot of this scene. Arguably the greatest and most extreme zombiemovie slaughter bar none!
4. FALLING PIANO
“Falling piano” – Zombieland (2009)
The cheerful church-goer in this clip may have had God on her side, but she still gets her zombie-slaying ideas from old Loony Toon cartoons.
5. EXPLODING ROAD ZOMBIES
“Exploding road zombies” – Planet Terror (2007)
This scene from Robert Rodriguez’s grindhouse flick could have come straight out of controversial videogame racer Carmageddon, which interestingly, has recently made a comeback.
“Propellerhead” – Dawn of the Dead (1978)
Messrs.’ George A. Romero and special FX whizz Tom Savini were the orchestrators behind this celebrated zombiescalping.
“Motormouth” – Zombie Holocaust (1980)
Weapon improvisation is something the Dead Rising videogames encourages. So it seems did this Italian fright flick, with our hero finding a unique use for his boat’s motor.
8. STONE ROSES ON VINYL
“Stone Roses on vinyl” – Shaun of the Dead (2004)
Simon Pegg and Nick Frost mull over one of indie music’s most divisive albums while dicing up zombies with their record collection.
9. EYES EXTINGUISHED
“Eyes extinguished” – Survival of the Dead (2009)
Ever wondered what happens when a walking corpse sucks on the end of a fire extinguisher? This lurid film explained all.
10. HELICOPTER MASSACRE
“Helicopter massacre” – 28 Weeks Later (2007)
Like the scalping from Day of the Dead, albeit on a much bigger scale. There is of course the debate about whether the antagonists from the 28 Days franchise are really zombies…
