Unrestricted Views from Paul Hills Writer and Director of The Power

1The Unrestricted View Horror Film Festival runs from Halloween till 6th of November showcasing some of the best new horror films and shorts with a great line up. We got to talk to some of the directors, producers and writers behind the movies to get their Unrestricted Views. Enjoy!

Love Horror: Tell us about your film?
Paul Hills: The Power is a long cherished labour of love for me. The idea crystalised in 2002 when I read a magazine article on Satanic Ritual abuse. This combined with being arrested and loosing my liberty for a night was the genesis of the project. The film is about Magda, an Anthropoligiist, who is kidnapped by Satanists. Nearly the whole film is her trying to find a way to escape their clutches.

Love Horror: How did you get into making horror movies?
Paul Hills:This is my first horror film. I’ve always been a fan of the genre and love “Rosemary’s Baby” and “The Exorcist”. I didn’t want to make a standard horror film. I wanted to do something a little unusual. “The Power” in many ways is a more of a European style film. It has parallels for instance with “A man Escaped” and “The Vanishing”.

Love Horror: What is your view on horror in 2016 and how would you change it?
Paul Hills:The problem with horror today is that mostly people are just remaking the same film over and over again. It is rare that something original comes out.

Love Horror: What is your favourite horror film and why?
Paul Hills:“The Exorcist” because it is so scary and original and in terms of how it effected me it is the most powerful horror film I have ever seen.

Love Horror: If Hollywood came knocking and gave you anything you wanted what movie would you make and who would it star?
Paul Hills:If I could make any movie at any budget I would make an epic period film about Marechal Michel Ney, the Bravest of the brave. If I could choose any actor to play the lead it would be Javier Bardem. I know that’s not a horror film, but I have a horror film I am developing that hopefully will shoot next year.
