Unrestricted Views from Paul Bushe & Brian O’Neill Directors of Killers Within

Returning to make the Halloween period all the more petrifying the Unrestricted View Horror Film Festival is back running from the 29th October to the 4th November, and so is our Unrestricted Views bringing you an insight to the people behind the fantastic fright fest of films on show.

Tell us about your film?
Killers Within really is a passion project for us. It is the culmination of years of hard work and was born out of the ashes of other films which unfortunately fell apart during development. Thanks to the support of our producers we were able to assemble a phenomenal cast and crew who gave us their all. The result… Killers Within is an action-packed monster horror thriller, with strong characters and plenty of laughs. There’s bank robbers, kidnappers, explosions, sex, guns and a few man-eating Illuminati Reptilian overlords to boot!

How did you get into making horror movies?
We met in 2003 while working s runners. We had similar interests in films and were soon working together on our first short film “A Taxing Night”. “A Taxing Night” won Best First Irish Short at the Galway Film Fleadh 2005.

From there we went on to write, produce and direct more short films, and a couple of feature film proof of concepts. These proof of concepts lead to development and financing. Each feature getting to different points. But unfortunately those films, like so many that enter development, never made it out. From their ashes came “Killers Within”.

As kids we would have watched “A Nightmare on Elm Street”, “Childs Play”, “Monster Squad”, “The Thing” etc. Then later as teenagers and young adults it was films like “Dog Soldiers”, “The Descent”, “Dawn of the Dead”, “From Dusk Till Dawn” and “30 Day’s of Night” that grabbed our attention.

What is your view on horror in 2018 and how would you change it?
We think horror as a whole has probably never been as popular or as varied. Out of all genre’s of film horror is the one with the most sub-genres, which makes it truly unique. For example on your site you even break down your top 10 lists by sub genre, which is great.

Looking at the last two years alone, we’ve had a wonderful mix in terms of tone, scale, budget, and taste. Films such as “A Quiet Place”, “Annihilation”, “Suspiria”, “Mandy”, “Get Out”, “The Babysitter”, “Overlord”, “The Nun”, “Cargo”, even “Halloween” and “Hellraiser” are back.

We don’t think we would change much at the moment as it feels like all tastes are being catered for and that’s so important.

What is your favourite horror film and why?
Sorry that’s too difficult to answer, again due to the amount of sub genres. But here are some top picks. “Alien”, The Thing”, “The Fly”, “Rosemary’s Baby” and “The Shining”

If Hollywood came knocking and gave you anything you wanted what movie would you make and who would it star?
We have a couple of films written that we would love to make. One is a straight up balls to the wall action movie called “Into The Red”. The other is an action / thriller with Chinese mythological overtones called “Dan Wu Jiu”. We have a couple of other horror concepts we are working on too. One deals with astral projection while the other is an Alien horror comedy. We like to work on projects we have written or had a hand in shaping from their inception. When it comes to casting who knows, we’ll have to wait and see ;). In terms of an existing franchise… Paul wouldn’t mind having a go at Terminator while Brian has his eye set on Highlander.
