Unrestricted Views from Marie Vandelannoote director of The Shroud

Returning to make the Halloween period all the more petrifying the Unrestricted View Horror Film Festival is back running from the 28th October to the 3rd November, and so is our Unrestricted Views bringing you an insight to the people behind the fantastic fright fest of films on show.

Tell us about your film ?
The Shroud is an old fashion gothic ghost story, based on a celtic legend. When I wrote it,
I really wanted to find back the thrills I had when I was a kid, when you discover all these scary stories, when you read Maupassant or Poe for the first time. And It’s also a tribute to the Hammer movies, like the old Dracula films with Christopher Lee or all Vincent Price’s films.

How did you get into making horror movies?
I spent a big part of my childhood in a videoclub, talking about films with the owner and he really made my horror films education !! Thanks to him, I discovered films like Fright Night, CHUD, Braindead, Maniac Cop, Evil Dead, Hellraiser, The Blob, The Body Snatchers and so many others. I really fell in love with this universe. So writting horror stories was pretty obvious for me. Besides, I always had a lot of nightmares, every night, and they really feed my imagination. It’s actually a good way to exorcise them, too. It’s my curse and my blessing, at the same time! But I don’t make only horror movies. My previous films were dramas, and the next one is a drama too. I would also love to make political films, or historical films. I don’t want to be labelled.

What is your view on horror in 2019 and how would you change it?
The Horror genre really regained some popularity these last years, I think it’s a good thing. We discovered new horror directors like Jordan Peele or Mike Flanagan who are really remarkable. Streaming platforms provide a huge choice of films but also amazing Horror Series like Ash VS Evil Dead, Black Summer or the really good new Creepshow by Nicotero. If I can show only one regret it’s the number of remakes, reboots, prequels, sequels… I would love to see more new stories and more new boogeymen to fear ! And I don’t have the pretention to completely change things. I only want to find my own place, and be able to tell and share all the stories I have in my head.

What is your favorite horror movies and why?
There are several films that really impressed me, like Salvage, (Josh and Jeff Crook), or The Devil’s Chair (Adam Mason). Stake Land (Jim Mickel ) was pretty amazing too. Frailty (Bill Paxton) really impressed me. There is also From Dusk Till Dawn I really love. I didn’t expected it to be a Horror Movie when I saw it for the first time and I really liked the mix ! The film moves at a really fast pace and you get no rest until the end. It’s a masterpiece of this genre and I take the same pleasure watching it every time !

If Hollywood came knocking and gave you anything you wanted, what movie would you make and who would it star?
I have this script for a feature film, a horror movie adaptation from a novel I wrote and that got published few years ago. I would be love to see this project finally on screen.
Regarding actors, I would love to work with John Cusack who I admire a lot for his eclectic film choices as well as his strong political engagements. Sasha Roiz also, he was really good especially as the ambiguous character Renard in the serie Grimm, and Morgana O’reilly. I loved her performance in Gerard Johnstone’s Housebound. She was absolutely stunning in it.
