Below PJ Blakey-Novis tells us about himself, his writing and his favourite horror films:

“My name is Peter, but I write horror stories under P.J. Blakey-Novis. Most of my previous work has been short stories and I’ve released four collections to date (with a fifth coming July), as well as a horror novella, Four, which has done particularly well. Through Red Cape Publishing, which I co-founded with my Graphic Designer wife, we began putting together multi-author anthologies, beginning with the release of the Elements of Horror series in the later part of 2019 (four books, with the themes Earth, Air, Fire, and Water). This year’s anthology project is somewhat larger – an alphabetised series of twenty-six books, beginning with A is for Aliens and B is for Beasts which were released in March and May of this year. The intention is to have the first seven books out by the end of the year (Aliens, Beasts, Cannibals, Demons, Exorcism, Fear, and Genies). I’ve been hugely impressed by the quality of the submissions we have received so far, from incredible authors dotted across the world.

While writing horror only really began for me a couple of years ago, horror movies had been something I’ve enjoyed since I was old enough to get away with watching them (usually at a friend’s house as they were very much off-limits at mine). I remember watching the Exorcist for the first time when I was in my teens, and it truly terrified me. Watching it in the dark may not have been sensible! My favourites are usually films with a possession theme as these really get to me and the whole point is to be scared, right? If I had to pick a few horror movies that I could watch over and over, I’d say The Exorcist, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Thing, and The Conjuring. I also have a huge soft spot for horror comedies, in particular Shaun of the Dead, Severance, The Cottage, and Tucker & Dale Vs Evil.”
