Below star of The Host Nigel Barber talks about his favourite horror film:

“I’ve chosen a film that goes back to 1983, it was directed by Tony Scott, starring Catherine Deneuve, David Bowie, Susan Sarandon, cinematography by Stephen Goldblatt and it was called The Hunger. It came out 37 years ago and it still resonates in my soul, it was one of the most beautifully shot, well-crafted, perfectly edited horror stories. Catherine Deneuve plays Miriam Blaylock, she’s a vampire that’s been around for millennium. They start off in flashbacks when she was in Egypt during the Pharaohs times and her relationships with people. She chose a human being, promising them eternal life and turns them into a vampire as she is and then we cut to the present. We see that she has chosen her companion John, played by David Bowie, and he begins to suffer insomnia, ageing very quickly in a few days and isn’t quite sure what’s going on. Catherine Deneuve contacts a specialist, Sarah Roberts, played by Susan Sarandon, who specializes in ageing disorders. That’s where it starts and it’s just amazing.

Unfortunately, David Bowie’s character just continues to diminish and he realizes that yes he’s been promised everlasting life, but not everlasting youth and he just gets older and older. There were some wonderful scenes and music. There was a beautiful love scene between Sarandon and Deneuve which I still think is very powerful. That for me is probably one of the best out there. I’ve seen so many in my time. I remember going into the cinema on a rainy afternoon by myself in Westwood Village in Los Angeles to watch the original Exorcist. I don’t know why I did that, but I did! They are classics, Poltergeist, The Omen – I’m sort of pushed towards these religious angles, that almost seem quite possible that this would happen. But for me I suggest people revisit The Hunger, it’s beautifully shot, seductive and very powerful.”
