We where lucky enough to get Natasha to take a break from her podcast and tell us all about her favourite horror film:

“Silver sphere to my head, I would have to say PHANTASM is my favorite horror movie.

I will always remember the first time I saw PHANTASM. It was the night before the first day of high school. I was a nervous wreck about my impending journey into ninth grade so I decided to try to relax with a movie I randomly rented from WOW Video.

I remember being struck by the characters. The Tall Man was such an imposing and original villain. Reggie and Jody were such likable and unexpected friends. And then there was Mike.

I really resonated with Mike’s character. Starting high school is such a tumultuous experience for any teenager, and it was no different for me. Just as Mike was still mourning the loss of his parents and dealing with the fear of losing his brother Jody, I felt very lost and alone beginning high school.

The first day of class was scary, but the boy who had the locker next to me oddly reminded me of Mike and we became friends which lead to making more friendships and then high school wasn’t so terrifying anymore.

PHANTASM will always be tied to my memories of starting high school, but I also love this movie because it has been a champion of independent filmmaking for 40 years. I have always admired the fact that Don Coscarelli was able to create a story that was so incredibly original without a big budget and without major studio help. He willed PHANTASM and its characters into existence and now they live on forever.

I also love the score by Fred Myrow & Malcolm Seagrave. It is so haunting and atmospheric. It is my favorite movie theme across all genres.

Just to give you an idea of how much I love PHANTASM, for its 40th anniversary I helped organize a “hearse stuffing contest” sponsored by FANGORIA and Alamo Drafthouse. We fit 30 PHANTASM fans in a hearse!

I am also fortunate to have interviewed Reggie Bannister, Michael Baldwin, and producer Paul Pepperman for my podcast on the FANGORIA Podcast Network called CLASS OF 79 which will debut soon! It was amazing talking to the very people who created my favorite horror movie.”
