Five FrightFest Facts From Toby Poser & John Adams directors of THE DEEPER YOU DIG

The Twentieth FrightFest is here so obviously our exclusive interview feature Five FrightFest Facts From… is back with a vengeance. Below we hear from and you can read more FrightFest Facts from 2019 and beyond by clicking HERE.

1. Tell us about your film?
TOBY: The Deeper You Dig is about the collision of three lives after an accident leads to murder. Guilt never stays buried; the dead don’t disappear; love knows no boundaries. A teaspoon of the occult with a dash of maggots…. a sprinkle of creepy clown and a heaping pile of dirt. Lots of dirt.

JOHN: This is a film about the different angles of a horrible act. The power of guilt, grief and love and how they intertwine to create supernatural forces in the lives of three regular people.

2. How did you get into making horror movies?
TOBY: John and Zelda had a practice run with a moody Civil War era ghost story. And after 4 dramatic features I was ready to join in on the horror fun. I love horror that creeps its way into other genres, and I think this film is raw drama that dabbles in the supernatural with a good dose of terror.

JOHN: We got into horror movies because the genre allows us for more artistic freedom than a classic drama. We love visual storytelling and the horror world is so much more accepting and open to taking cinematic chances

3. What film would you love to see screened at FrightFest and why?
TOBY: Is there a doc about Edward Gorey? I hope so. I’d watch that in a heartbeat. I’d love to see the mind behind those spooky, strange, dry, yet almost lyrical images. He’s so cool.

JOHN: what I love about an amazing festival like Frightfest is that they will show me what I need to see and it’s so wonderful to know that the quality of their choices are always so high.

4. If you could create your own award to give at the FrightFest, what would it be and why?
TOBY: I’d give an award for film makers over the age of 75. Often attention is placed on youth and new visions- which is great – but older folks have seen the most and have a vast, textured, honest perspective that intrigues me.

JOHN: I think all festivals should have a “most original feature” award. Originality is what pushes all art forward and should always be celebrated.

5. If your life was made into a horror film, what would it be called and who would play the starring role?
TOBY: It would be called My Daddy Was a Brain Surgeon (When He Wasn’t Eating Them). Starring Ruth Gordon.

JOHN: It would be called HE FELL INTO HELL and it would star Toby because she always wakes me up when I’m dreaming about harassing the devil. This time she couldn’t wake in time and would have to find her way to hell to retrieve me.
