Five FrightFest Facts From Samuel Gridley, Director and co-Writer of Criminal Audition

The Twentieth FrightFest is here so obviously our exclusive interview feature Five FrightFest Facts From… is back with a vengeance. Below we hear from Samuel Gridley, Director and co-Writer of Criminal Audition and you can read more FrightFest Facts from 2019 and beyond by clicking HERE.

1. Tell us about your film?
Criminal Audition is sort of a TV talent show for wannabe criminals. But, one of the judges decides to put themselves in charge and things get…bloody. It’s a film that truly creeps up on you, seemingly starting as one thing, but becomes something else when you least expect it to. Criminal Audition is darkly comic, mysterious, touching, thrilling and will spark debates on the correct way to make tea…

2. How did you get into making horror movies?
I have wanted to be a film director for as long as I can remember. Making a horror film seems to be an inevitability, it has always been my favourite space to watch movies in, I must have watched at least 1000 horror films in my time. And, although we didn’t necessarily plan for Criminal Audition to be one, it seems we subconsciously made it into one.

3. What film would you love to see screened at FrightFest and why?
I’m interested in diversifying the genre and who and what we see on screen. So for one, I’d love a mini-retrospective on the really strong female voices in the genre in the last few years- I’d show Julia Ducournau’s Raw, Ana Lily Amirpour’s A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night and Coralie Fargeat’s Revenge. Those are all powerful films and all debuts!

4. If you could create your own award to give at the FrightFest, what would it be and why?
I think I would create an award called ‘Least Deaths, Most Chills’. Essentially for the film that relies least on gore or murdering but is still very scary. Blood and guts are undeniably fun, but to make a horror film that is simply chilling is difficult and takes real skill. It’s sort of like comedians not swearing in their acts but still being funny as anything.

5. If your life was made into a horror film, what would it be called and who would play the starring role?
It would be called ‘Imposter Syndrome’ and Barbara Crampton would play me, obviously she’s nothing like me, but she’s just wonderful.
