Five FrightFest Facts From Rodman Flender director of EAT BRAINS LOVE

The Twentieth FrightFest is here so obviously our exclusive interview feature Five FrightFest Facts From… is back with a vengeance. Below we hear from Rodman Flender director of EAT BRAINS LOVE and you can read more FrightFest Facts from 2019 and beyond by clicking HERE.

1. Tell us about your film?
Have you ever sat through a Hollywood romance and thought, “This would be so much better if it only had some gut-munching, telepathic mind invasion, trigger-happy government agents, and lots of spurting blood?” EAT BRAINS LOVE has all of that and a few surprises for those who think they’ve seen everything.

2. How did you get into making horror movies?
“Creature Features,” a local TV program that showed classic and not-so-classic horror films, was my childhood babysitter. Fast-forward 20 years, I was amazingly fortunate to work for one of our genre’s legends, Roger Corman, who gave me the opportunity to direct a horror film of my own. That was “The Unborn,” which just got a beautiful restoration by Scream Factory.

3. What film would you love to see screened at FrightFest and why?
DEMON LOVER DIARY, directed by Joel DeMott, brilliantly chronicles the making of an ultra-low-budget regional horror film. It’s the best making-of-a-movie documentary ever made. The sacrifices the filmmakers put themselves through, the on-screen tension between everyone involved, and a final escape from an extremely hostile location make this doc a kind of horror film of its own. There are some awful-looking bootlegs of this title floating around; the movie deserves a proper screening.

4. If you could create your own award to give at the FrightFest, what would it be and why?
The Charles B. Griffith screenwriting award. The late Mr. Griffith wrote the original “Little Shop of Horrors,” “Death Race 2000,” “Not of this Earth,” among many, many others. He is an unsung hero of the genre.

5. If your life was made into a horror film, what would it be called and who would play the starring role?
“I Ate Too Many Pistachios” starring Crispin Glover.
