Five FrightFest Facts From Justin McConnell director of Lifechanger

1. Tell us about your film?
LIFECHANGER is about a murderous shape-shifter out on a mission to make things right with the woman he loves. It’s a serial-killer thriller wrapped up in a body-horror, wrapped up in a metamorphosis film, with a lot of subtext about relationships and sexual politics. It’s the horror story equivalent of a turducken.

2. How did you get into making horror movies?
I’ve been a monster kid from a very young age. It started with my family (mostly my dad) showing me things like ‘The Monster Squad’ and ‘The Lost Boys’, and grew from there. At around 15 I knew I wanted to make films for a living, and since horror at the time was my favorite genre (and still basically is), that was the natural path. The full story is a long one, so I’ll spare you that.

3. What film would you love to see screened at FrightFest and why?
I’m not sure I understand this question in context. Do you mean what new film would I like to see screened that wasn’t selected, or which film retrospectively would I like to see in the history of horror? I’ll answer the first possibility: I really enjoyed LUZ when I saw it as a screener. Would have been a good selection. As for in the history of horror, I’ve always dreamed that one day I’d get to see ‘In The Mouth of Madness’ on the big screen.

4. If you could create your own award to give at the FrightFest, what would it be and why?
It’d be the “Justin McConnell Award of Thanks In The Arena of Programming, sub-category: Justin McConnell-related films”. I thank them a lot for giving not just LIFECHANGER a chance, but our horror short ‘Do You See What I See?’ a couple of years back. Hopefully this is the start of many films playing there over the years.

5. If your life was made into a horror film, what would it be called and who would play the starring role?
It’d be called “Eventually A Bear Will Eat Him” and it would star Paul Giamatti in a wig. I’m assuming it would be a story told from sometime in my future. So maybe the wig won’t be necessary after all. Time and my hairline will tell!
