The Twentieth FrightFest is here so obviously our exclusive interview feature Five FrightFest Facts From… is back with a vengeance. Below we hear from Jordan Barker director of Witches in The Woods and you can read more FrightFest Facts from 2019 and beyond by clicking HERE.
1. Tell us about your film?
Witches in The Woods is a modern survival horror film set against the backdrop of freshly logged mountains that once were home to the Salem Witch Trials. A group of UMass students head out on a snowboarding trip only to get stranded in the middle of nowhere. As the temperature drops and the group dynamic unravels, a virtual and then literal witch hunt begins.
2. How did you get into making horror movies?
I was told as a young boy to go to bed because my parents were going to watch a movie that was for ‘grown-ups’. I remember sneaking out of my room and watching through the banister railings, part mesmerized, part traumatized. The film was Jaws. I’m not sure if it was the allure of doing or watching things that I wasn’t supposed to, or the thrill of being able to vicariously experience the fear of death and come out the otherside unscathed (somewhat). I think like a lot of young filmmakers, there is a lot of room to play around in the genre on a budget; to push it, to make it your own and really give the audience the types of white knuckle experiences we seek out to feel alive.
3. What film would you love to see screened at FrightFest and why?
Not sure I could pick just one, but I would love to see a night of classics, to give new audiences a chance to experience some of the masters’ work as they were meant to be seen. The Exorcist, Rosemary’s Baby, Poltergeist, Texas Chainsaw Massacre etc.
4. If you could create your own award to give at the FrightFest, what would it be and why?
I would call it the “Guts Award” for the young filmmaker with the most horrifying story about the making of their film. Sometimes the stories about what it takes to get a film across the finish line are as terrifying and exciting as the films themselves.
5. If your life was made into a horror film, what would it be called and who would play the starring role?
Being an identical twin from the womb of an identical twin, with all 4 of us sharing our birthdays, I would have to say the title of my film would have to be “TWINS” and since everyone thinks I look like Richard Madden as Rob Stark from Game of Thrones, why don’t we get him to play all 4 roles. Now that I’d like to see!
