Grimm’s Opening and Closing Films

Grimm Up North

Kicking the festival off in suitably shocking style, this year’s exclusive blood-red carpet Opening Night Gala Premiere film will be the gripping paranoid thriller RETREAT, starring Thandie Newton, Cillian Murphy, and Jamie Bell. A tense and harrowing study in emotional and psychological trauma by a strong and committed cast, this taut, intelligent thriller marks an auspicious debut for writer-director Carl Tibbetts.

The evening will begin at 7pm at Manchester 235 Casino, just around the corner from the screening venue with a drinks reception before moving over to AMC Cinemas for the screening. The film will be followed by an exclusive Q+A with director Carl Tibbetts, and producer Gary Sinyor before the party continues back at Manchester 235.

Our host for the evening will be Grimm Up North’s newly-appointed Festival Patron Yvette Fielding, star of TV’s MOST HAUNTED and legendary cult TV hoax GHOST WATCH

We’ll also have some of the other members of the MOST HAUNTED team joining us along with a number of other well known faces from film and TV. It should be a night to remember.

And to end it all …. THE WICKER TREE, SUNDAY 9th 9.10pm

Bringing this year’s festival screenings to a suitably dramatic close will be the regional premiere of Robin Hardy’s first film in 25 years, the much-anticipated THE WICKER TREE. Based on his own novel, COWBOYS FOR CHRIST, the film sees Robin revisiting many of the themes of his seminal classic THE WICKER MAN, albeit from a 21st Century perspective.

Robin Hardy will be joining us for the screening, and for a Q&A afterwards, and the event will be hosted by Andy Murray, author of biographies of Nigel Kneale (Into the Unknown: Headpress) and Russell T Davies (T is for Television: Reynolds & Hearn, with Mark Aldridge), and curator of the Cornerhouse’s fondly remembered annual Darkness Over Britain screenings. This promises to be a unique opportunity to gain an insight into the mind and creative processes of one of cinema’s great mavericks, to ask all of those questions you’ve always had about THE WICKER MAN, and to discover what drove Robin to revisit its timeless themes.
